4. As a theist I'd say this is disrespectful
People usually arrive at their beliefs with a degree of care and thought, whether or not we agree with them. If things were cut and dry we'd all be in agreement.

39. It seems to me that there are two ULTRA personal things a person
wrestles with that are no one else's business: their own mortality and what/how they feel about God. How they end up on either question is no one else's business and no one else's to challenge or ridicule. However, people do it all the time.

If believers are asking for respect, then it certainly behooves us to treat atheists with the same respect we'd like to be treated with.

Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 05:37 PM by sam sarrha
and i dont think many people are well enough informed of the alternatives to cults..

i used meditation to quit drinking, 28 years of alcoholism,.. it worked really good. after meditating about 6 months i ran into a Tibetan Lama ..this was in West Texas.. i was invited to his Chinrezig Center, i studied Buddhism for 4 years, 3 meetings a week in meditation, various mind training techniques, etc before i became a Buddhist. Buddhism isn't a Religion it is a method of training the mind.. it gas no god or Prophet. Buddha means one who is Awake. Buddhism is based on a single Logical statement a man discovered 2600 yr ago. it involves no faith, it works or it doesn't. i really didn't learn that much, i learned much thru their instutional practice and techniques.. i had come to believe what Buddhism was before i really knew what it really was..

i was a scientist i had done extensive studies in religion and "Groups".. i was even kidnapped by the Moonies and taken 500 miles away, it took me a week to get away from them... and back home.

people do things because someone makes it sound good or they think they'll get layed thru it... people in this country are very ignorant about reality..

"Breathe, breathe in the air.
Don't be afraid to care.

Look around and choose your own ground.

all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be..."

Belief or the lack of it are probably hardwired.

There is nothing you can do to convert an atheist except to badger him into lip service with nothing behind it but resentment toward you.

There's probably nothing an atheist can do to shake your faith.

But in the same way that the absence of the internet preceeded its presence, so too did atheism preceed any subsequent belief.

So atheism is older than any theism, so which is the real fad?

102. Actually, IMO primitive Animism is older than both.
Primitive Animism = the naive projection of human social reality on the universe.
Theism = The abstraction of that naive projection
Atheism = the rejection of that naive projection

79. It’s all god's fault.
- He's always so busy helping people win ballgames and Oscars and shit like that, then you turn around and there's atheists all over the place. Why can’t god just admit he has too much on his plate and let someone else take over?

85. Your 'yet' has too much punch in your post.
A god or gods or goddesses in one form or another are historical mainstays. It's a smorgasboard. People take a bite of this and a bite of that, maybe fill their plate with only one dish -- whichever approach they think best based on how hungry they are.

There have been atheists around, I suppose roughly for the same span as the god-followers. Neither 'position' of belief is a 'fad.' Both have long and provocative and highly interesting histories.

'Yet' is better used very sparingly and only then for fair assessments.

87. For me it was the other way around.
I went from believing, or at least wanting to believe, to doubt to nonbelief, to acceptance that a lack of gods is a physical fact.

If atheism is a fad, how come religious writers have been trying to refute it for millenia. I seem to recall many parts of the OT pointing out that nonbelievers are fools or whatever. This means there were in fact people who did not believe back then. And it's not just Abrahamic religions either. So it's no fad.

No, really! Why don't I believe in dog yet? Do you know (not believe, but KNOW for a fact) something that I do not?

Surprised this thing wasn't locked a long time ago. When the OP doesn't even make an argument or bother to respond to comments, it's pretty clear that they are not interested even in contentious discussion, only in annoying people.

100. Dictionary anyone?
I'm thinking you need to re-read the definition of fad. Fads typically don't last centuries. But even assuming you are right the space between belief- worship-and love is obvious. Thinking, "ok there is a god," is a long way from thinking there's a god I want to worship. I mean no offense as I am on your territory here, but have you thought about why you felt the need to say this?
