10. The Heart Sutra.
Translation by Edward Conze
Homage to the Perfection of Wisdom, the Lovely, the Holy!

Avalokiteshvara, The Holy Lord and Bodhisattva, was moving in the deep course of the Wisdom which has gone beyond. He looked down from on high, He beheld but five heaps, and he saw that in their own-being they were empty.

Here, Sariputra, form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form; emptiness does not differ from form, form does not differ from emptiness; whatever is form, that is emptiness, whatever is emptiness, that is form, the same is true of feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness.

13. First of all, a lot depends on St. Paul's definition of "long hair".
What was condidered to be "long hair" for a man in the first century AD? I don't know, do you?

And secondly, all images we have of Christ, with the exception of the shroud of Turin, for those who believe it is what it is purported to be, are what someone who really hasn't the faintest idea of what the man really looked like imagine him to have appeared, based on their own criteria of how a godly man would look.

One can only wonder at the lengths some people will go to in an attempt to denegrate the beliefs of others. Is such triviality really worth the time and effort you put into it? Does it accomplish something of value to you?

24. I'm not at all "worried" about what St. Paul said or thought.
The OP, however, cited Paul's words and made a comparison to an artist's concept of what Christ might have looked like who knows how many centuries later. Ergo, your question might more appropriately be directed to Xicano.

33. Well, I certainly apologize if I've offended you in anyway
I can assure you it is not my intent to offend someone's beliefs. On the other hand, when I see material which denigrates women and people who believe differently to the degree that the bible does. Or when I see material which goes so far as to command putting to death people for their different beliefs or other personal rights which harms no one. Then I feel that such material is not only repulsive, but, certainly open to criticism.

Anyway, sorry if that offends you.

41. I would hope no one is offended by your post
I see it as merely a statement of contradiction that many people in our society live with. I think healthy discussion about religion is good: We certainly are at a liminal time as far as religion/spirituality. Unfortunately, many are very sensitive and find it difficult to engage in a discussion without intense passion either negative/positive. Welcome to DU.

16. Never Thought About it That Way,
but we don't know how long Jesus' hair was. Although a short Roman-style haircut was probably not his thing.

I think that verse is a concealed attack on Jesus' brother James, who was Paul's main rival. James was a lifelong Nazirite and never cut his hair. One of many little digs he gets in at various times.

23. we have been misled...
From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their minds. In North America he is most often depicted as being taller than his disciples, lean, with long, flowing, light brown hair, fair skin and light-colored eyes. Familiar though this image may be, it is inherently flawed... "While Western imagery is dominant, in other parts of the world he is often shown as black, Arab or Hispanic." ...It was the Bible, however, that resolved the question of the length of Jesus's hair. While most religious artists have put long hair on Christ, most biblical scholars believe that it was probably short with tight curls...

Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 01:58 AM by mtf80123
Yes... they are all representative of "Spirit".

Though Buddhism does not represent any form of "Theological" representation.

"Karma" is the "Infallible Truth". "Cause and Effect".

The Buddha taught that "everything" is "Impermanent".

Therefore, "nothing really matters"... except how you lead your own personal life and the consequences thereof. This has a direct relation of your next 'Incarnation'. Your next 'birth' will be determined by how you lead this life.

More than likely.... you will become that which you most are attached to in this life.

32. Paul Was a Roman
Roman men kept their hair cut short because of their strong martial tradition.

Semites in that era were no longer the great warriors that their ancestors were. Therefore, it is likely that the men kept their hair longer than did the Romans. How long? Don't know for sure. But what few frescoes I have seen from that era suggests their hair was longer than the Romans.

Are you asking was Jesus right? I'd be hard pressed to find any statements or teachings of his that I'd disagree with. I certainly don't see how actual Christian teachings guides anyone into a gilded cage. In fact, there's not a lot of room for anything gilded (ie, "gold-plated") in nascent Christian teachings. Certainly some of the modern mainstream distortions of Jesus's teachings can isolate the individual Christian from the moral dictates of Christianity. But it'd be one heck of a stretch to tie the beliefs of today's turbo-Christians ot the practices of the little rabbi who drove the moneylenders out of Temple of Jerusalem.

Terrible writings. Supposedly the OT is the bad part of the bible, with all the horror, violence and the like. Frankly, the NT is awful as well thanks, in large part, the writings attributed to that he-man woman hating Paul.

Are there any "holy" books out there NOT written by assholes??
