7. Cortés, of course, could never have defeated the Aztecs, had not those he defeated earlier
joined with him against the Aztec empire. There was a great deal to dislike about the conquistador, but the various peoples subjected first by the Aztecs, and next by Cortés, seemed to have no difficulty allying with Cortés when he set out to conquer the Aztecs. He marched into the center of the empire with thousands of the Aztecs enemies beside him. It is true that he had some slight technological advantages, but he had only a handful of horses and cannon; and his advantages could not have withstood a sustained assault by superior numbers, as is shown by several of his setbacks. Prior to his second conquest of the city, he again recruited troops from among the enemies of the Aztecs
