Poll question: Would this constitute evidence that there is no God?
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 07:41 PM by Boojatta
Somebody puts four quarters into a video game machine and dies of a sudden stroke before having a chance to begin playing the game. If there were a God, then the stroke would have happened either before the money was put into the video game machine or after the person who paid for the game finished playing that game, right?

1. No, nor is it proof that there is a god.

In fact, I dont think it proves anything other then somebody died wasting money on a video game.

6. I think the previous user of the machine prayed
That if he could not win, nobody should win. Since he is such a good Christian 'soldier', hasn't missed a church service in 10 years and fantasized about killing all abortion doctors, God obliged and struck the next guy dead just as he was about to hit the jackpot.

So there still could be a god, but he or she just does not love guy #2.

9. It's all relative.
Your situation would only constitute evidence for no god if the only god being considered has the ability to prevent death and is at least indifferent to video game usage. There should be a large number of possibilities that involve variations on both counts.

Additionally, suppose the game only cost 75¢. An god that violently opposes overpaying could conceivably smite the fool.
Suppose the game cost 85¢. The god of exact change only might kill for that. (Note: this god could also violently oppose overpaying.)
Suppose a god directly controls everything in the universe for its own reasons. Such an event could reasonably fall within that god's plan.

10. On the contrary
The next person at the machine would be a Jaysus-loving Christian who would add his own quarter, pull the lever, and since it is a video poker machine at Vegas, would hit the jackpot, and feel the love of God, since the original bet was multiplied by five. Of course, the person with the stroke would have been an atheist, and have completed the holy plan.

Next question?

14. Yes, if your scenerio came to be, and we had absolute evidence the scenerio came to be,
then we would have absolute evidence God is not real.

18. Do you honestly think god has time to take an interest in video games during football
season? Two teams praying for the same thing? Do you know how much time it must take to decide a winner?

Man, you sure didn't think your poll question through.

23. The money and the machine are inadequate instruments
to decide the question.

A vengeful god might have knocked this person off for, say, misdeeds, prior to the video game's beginning. But nothing in the game not played would demonstrate that. If the gamer were no better but no worse than all the rest of us, we'd be more inclined to think the stroke's timing was sad, dumb luck rather than evidence or not of a divine Being.
