Philosophy student vs. Mormon...
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 03:41 AM by armyowalgreens
I'm use to having extremely difficult discussions with fellow philosophy majors. I actually get a little nervous when I realize that I am entering the ring with another intellectual. These debates are usually very long and tedious. But we all come away feeling accomplished.

Tonight, for the first time, I debated philosophy with a Mormon. I've never ran into someone that was so uneducated on the subject. I just walked all over his arguments against gay marriage. And it's not like I'm some genius philosopher with decades of experience. I'm a second year philosophy student. I'm a total newbie.

I almost feel bad for the guy. Almost...

On edit: Okay, never mind. I have realized that all I did was hopelessly confuse him.

His own words:

"Second god does exsist. The bible is a documentation of how god exsist in our everyday life and this is credible because of the fact of the many authors of the bible that have written of the same numerous accounts that these authours expirenced that they have wrote about and most never knew each other."

uuhhhhh where do I go from here? :o

1. You should not feel bad about defending your own views in the face of others.
I generally couch arguments in favor of gay marriage typically either on the Declaration of Independence's insistence on the right to happiness or simply upon the libertarian notion that it is none of the government's business what happens between two consenting adults. The government's primary interest should be seeking equality before the law. As it stands, gay couples are routinely denied benefits afforded to married heterosexual couples by virtue of lacking a certificate of marriage from city hall, but the love is the same. It is not equality.

3. I knew it!
"...and this is credible because of the fact of the many authors... have written of the same numerous accounts... and most never knew each other."

With the same logic, this proves that Bigfoot exists too!

5. Warp speed is technically not traveling faster than the speed of light.

You are altering the space-time continuum. You are basically compressing the space in front of you and expanding the space behind you at the same time. You could theoretically do that without actually moving the craft.

6. Philosphy majors rock!

I love this Band of Brothers feeling whenever someone declares himself a philosphy student.

You know, the few, the curious, the proud. lol.

7. All conspiracy theories are factual. And Santa's as real as the Loch Ness Monster.
Try to disprove at the peril of your immortal soul.
