4. Is a Folsom Street Fair poster legit without any Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?
Well, maybe the one with the big hair sitting at the table is a Sister, but doesn't really look like it to me.

12. A Dissenting View About Blasphemy Day (Paul Kurtz 2009)
September 29, 2009

The celebrating of "Blasphemy Day" by the Center for Inquiry by sponsoring a contest encouraging new forms of blasphemy, I believe is most unwise. It betrays the civic virtues of democracy ... It is not dissimilar to the anti-semitic cartoons of the Nazi era ... It is one thing to examine the claims of religion in a responsible way by calling attention to Biblical, Koranic or scientific criticisms, it is quite another to violate the key humanistic principle of tolerance. One may disagree with contending religious beliefs, but to denigrate them by rude caricatures borders on hate speech. What would humanists and skeptics say if religious believers insulted them in the same way? We would protest the lack of respect for alternative views in a democratic society ...

Professor Paul Kurtz is chair emeritus and founder of the Center for Inquiry ... Kurtz has spent much of his life on the critical examination of religion, but believes that naturalists need to emphasize and build positive alternatives to religion. For Kurtz, it is not enough to reject God, but to affirm the positive implications of humanism and naturalism for the good life and the just society ...

13. Kurtz' arguments are demolished by the 2nd comment.

I like Paul Kurtz, he's a brilliant man and he means well here, but he's mistaken.

Plus:

"What would humanists and skeptics say if religious believers insulted them in the same way?"

Fuck, this happens EVERY SINGLE DAY. The fact that this is even mentioned is proof of the blatant double standard - that believers have every right to get angry and upset at blasphemy or any imagined or perceived insult to their beliefs, but non-believers just have to be polite and shut up when their morality is questioned or their citizenship doubted.

On edit: Ooh, turns out Kurtz contradicted himself on this very topic. Comment #14 is quite enlightening.

15. International "Whine cuz people don't like atheists" Day
The political strategy is:

(1) Check whether people like atheists yet
(2) If there's still somebody who doesn't like atheists, then make fun of lots and lots of people
(3) Go to (1)

16. Funny you should put it that way,
considering how whiny this post sounds. What do atheists have to do with a leather festival?

Or did you not know what the Folsom Street Fair was?

There's a reason why atheists feel solidarity with the gay pride movement, and you have very effectively demonstrated it.
