low life vermin steals baby Jesus and holds him for ransom.
That sux, hope Doris gets her baby Jesus back.

The baby Jesus in a Nativity scene was reported stolen earlier this week. Friday, the Fairfield Police Station received a letter stating the figure was being held for ransom. The owner is pleading for her baby Jesus back. To Doris Thompson it's more than just a Christmas decoration it's a family heirloom.

The Nativity scene was purchased from the sears catalog 50-years-ago. Doris and her late husband Elmer bought it together. The couple was married for 47-years. On Monday, Doris noticed baby Jesus missing.

"It made me angry. I thought, 'What type of low life vermin steals baby Jesus.' Who would do that?'" The Nativity scene is a Christmas tradition. 75-year-old Doris decorates her home inside and out each year. Some ornaments she's had since childhood but the one that meant the most is now gone."Well, after all it's the Christmas story. That's what Christmas is all about." She believes the Nativity scene represents the heart of Christmas. She's going to continue putting it up year after year and just hope nothing else is taken.

Doris filed a police report with the Fairfield City Police Dept. Friday, officers received a ransom letter. It says, in exchange for baby Jesus local media stations must use offensive language. If not, they threatened to strike again and said next time it could be Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny who gets it. Police believe the letter is nothing more than a prank but Doris isn't laughing. "I don't understand why anyone would do anything like that. I don't understand it at all," she said.

Doris has a security camera but accidentally recorded over the weekend's footage. She says that won't happen again and she will be checking her tape nightly. She is also checking the manger daily hoping that whoever took her baby Jesus will return it.

prank. Not at all funny.

3.  Jesus returned

A light snow had settled over the hamlet of Fairfield, Ill. Saturday morning when Doris Thompson got up and once again checked to see if anyone had returned the stolen baby Jesus to her front yard Nativity scene.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Doris said. “Right there in the front yard - in the snow - was the baby Jesus!”

Mrs. Thompson had reported the 15” long figure missing last weekend. Thieves had removed the light bulb from inside the figure and had left the electrical cord and swaddling behind.

Then came a ransom note from the so-called reactionary group calling itself TARDS, an acronym for “Townsfolk Are a Reuniting them Damned Southerners”. The TARDS warned that if their demands weren’t met, they would be forced to issue orders to the rest of their cadre to kidnap other popular seasonal plastic icons such as Santa, the Easter Bunny and “that green Irish Leprechaun guy from Saint Patrick’s Day.”

Something must have gotten to the TARDS, as the baby Jesus was returned sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning. City Police Chief Brad Winter learned of the recovery of Mrs. Thompson’s baby Jesus around 9 o’clock Saturday morning. “I couldn’t be happier,” the Chief said. “Finally – the true meaning of Christmas has been returned.”

While Mrs. Thompson is pleased with the return of her plastic baby Jesus, she may not be done with the perpetrators who purloined her plastic Jesus. “I had video surveillance set up at my house,” Doris said. “Around 11 o’clock last night, I noticed a fairly new car pull up next to our house. I plan to review the tapes, and hopefully I’ll get a good look at who did this.”

Doris also had a message for the group TARDS. “What you did isn’t funny,” Doris said. “The baby Jesus is the heart of Christmas – that’s just something you don’t mess with.”

6. Mrs Thompson isn't threatening vengence in those closing comments, is she? That's not what the heart
of Christmas was all about...actually just the opposite from what I've read. :dilemma:

7. And nothing says....
....the "heart of Christmas" like getting someone 25 years to life on account of a petty-theft of a 50-year old baby Jesus doll charge.

- And curiously, no one respects you in the joint when they find out what you're in for.....
