Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
By JOSEPH RHEE, TAHMAN BRADLEY and BRIAN ROSS
Jan. 18, 2010

Coded references to New Testament Bible passages about Jesus Christ are inscribed on high-powered rifle sights provided to the United States military by a Michigan company, an ABC News investigation has found.

The sights are used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the training of Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. The maker of the sights, Trijicon, has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army.

How do they reconcile the Thou Shalt Not Kill part?

5. They rationalize
Multiple translations exist of the sixth commandment; the Hebrew words לא תרצח are variously translated as "thou shalt not kill" or "thou shalt not murder." Older Protestant translations of the Bible, those based on the Vulgate and Roman Catholic translations usually render it as "Thou shalt not kill," whereas Jewish and newer Protestant versions tend to use "You shall not murder." There is controversy as to which translation is more faithful, and both forms are quoted in support of many opposing ethical standpoints.

If you give it a little thought, you realize that religion has never really had a problem with murder. Not really. More people have been killed in the name of God than for any other reason. To cite a few examples, just think about Irish history, the Middle East, the Crusades, the Inquisition, our own abortion-doctor killings and, yes, the World Trade Center to see how seriously religious people take Thou Shalt Not Kill. Apparently, to religious folks—especially the truly devout—murder is negotiable. It just depends on who's doing the killing and who's getting killed.

14. As if sanction by the state makes it not murder.
Killing somebody in a war is no less morally wrong than killing somebody outside a war.

from ass ideas like this one where the STATE puts bible messages on soldier's guns.

the state is addicting to guns and killing people, not true Christians.

8. The state didn't do this.
They aided and abetted it by purchasing the equipment, but it was a private manufacturer who actually put those quotes on said equipment. As for true Scotsmen Christians, well, let's leave that debate for another thread.

4. Sounded better coming from a Chaplain, 12/7/41
Always heard that quote4 attributed to a Chaplain at the Navel Seaplane Station on Oahu, December 7, 1941. Having setup a machinegun ontop of his Pulpit after coming under attack that morning during the service. That unlike the subject story is something I can understand.

10. In commemoration of this act of Warrior Love......
...I have written a little ditty for GunSight Jesus that I hope you will enjoy........

I Got Jesus On My Gun Barrel©

I got Jesus on my gun barrel
Just like he's in my heart
The Lord will guide my bullets
And tear my enemies apart

Them other gods can't beat him
They don't never stand a chance
And with Jesus on my gun barrel
My bullets will surely pierce your pants

Now some may laugh and chuckle
And think my Jesus isn't true
But I know His holy presence
Will guide my bullets straight to you

That's why I've got Jesus on my gun barrel
That's why the LORD is in my heart
My Jesus guides all my bullets
And tears my enemies apart

Now you ought to join His army
Cause Lord Jesus got our back
With my Savior up on our side
Take no prisoners -- just attack

Always there to lend a helping hand
He'll pull you through the mess
He's the best god in the land
Forgive your sins - if you just confess

To my Jesus who's on my gun barrel
To the LORD that's in my heart
And may Jesus guide all my bullets
And tear my enemies apart

Though some may scoff and twitter
Sayin' my LORD ain't even real
Just let my Jesus get you in his sights
And we'll see who's ass he kills

My Jesus knows the battlefield
He's been a fighter from the start
That's why he's my Stone Cold Savior
Because I know he'll hit His mark

Cause I got Jesus on my gun barrel
Just like he's in my heart
My Lord will guide my bullets
And tear my enemies apart

- And remember kids, don't forget to turn that other cheek!

13. Genocide is the "other". Murder is one of our own.

That's just standard human morality in a religious guise.

16. To be honest this doesn't bother ME.
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 08:45 AM by dmallind
I can certainly see how this could be twisted for propaganda especially in non-Xian countries. However perhaps surprisingly it's not something that bothers me much as a nonbeliever. An innocuous and cryptic embedding of a biblical reference in a serial number is not exactly establishment. the fact it hasn't even been noticed for many years speaks to how successful it was as proselytizing. It would be very easy for the company to rejigger their serial numbers and embed references in a way that would be even more subtle, and even I don;t have the appetite for a law mandating an entirely secular approach to serial number nomenclature.

18. I have no problem with this...
They make some of the best sights on the planet. As a parent that has had 2 son's on the ground in Iraq, I couldn't care less if they put quotes from "Mine Kampf" in those sights-just as long as those sights help them kill what they're aiming at.
