Catholics cancel Stupak speech over healthcare vote
Illinois Catholics call off keynote by Stupak

Wanted: a new keynote speaker for the third annual Illinois Catholics Prayer Breakfast next month. Why? Michigan Representative Bart Stupak, hailed last fall for proposing an amendment that would impose tight restrictions on abortions, has been disinvited. Prayer breakfast organizers cite his compromise on Sunday to settle for an executive order that would aim to do the same.

Michael Sullivan, president of the Illinois Catholic Prayer Breakfast, said organizers could not give Stupak a platform in good conscience.

“An executive order is kind of like a light switch,” Sullivan said. “Whoever is in Washington can turn it on and turn it off. It doesn’t offer adequate protection for the unborn.”

Sullivan said guests called and threatened to boycott the event as soon as votes were taken in the House on Sunday. Anger was palpable on the House floor as well, where one Texas congressman called Stupak a “baby killer.”

Sullivan said Stupak was invited because of the amendment he proposed last November.

“He was standing up and saying ‘I’m not going to vote for health care reform that violates the dignity of the human person,’” Sullivan recalled.

He was disinvited for going back on that commitment.

“Essentially what we have now is a stimulus package for the abortion industry,” Sullivan said.

1. If you ride with thugs, they will hurt you if you turn on them.
They don't tolerate disagreement well, but they are really unforgiving about betrayal.

10. Good luck with that.
They don't release 'em, they just transfer them to a new parish with fresh victims, and sweep everything under the rug. Oh and then tell everyone else on the planet how fucked up and immoral non-Catholics are.

5. Bunch of weasels pushing the meme that Stupak's amendment was necessary.
And equally as disgusting are those that believe the weasels line of bullshit.

6. Stimulus package for the abortion industry?
In whose fantasy did that happen? Stupak was unknown except in MI until this came out. He thought he could ingratiate himself to the teabaggers and grab a few votes by being 'principled'. He 'forced' Obama to sign a useless executive order thinking he would be a hero. The second Noogiebooger screamed "baby-killer" in his direction, his fate was sealed. Stupak laid down with the dogs. One of the most conservative Dems in MI will soon step down, I predict.

7. I'm about as Catholic as they come
And I'm appalled by this.

It could not have been more stressful for Cong. Stupak to stand up and adhere to his beliefs.

No matter what he did, he was going to be roundly criticized by one side or the other.

He did what he could to keep the Hyde Amendment in the HC Bill.

Being "pro-life" is not just about abortion.

It also means protecting the less fortunate among us, and this bill will help save lives.

Pro-lifers are no less well off because Cong. Stupak settled for an executive order maintaining the status quo.

IMHO it was gut-wrenching for Cong. Stupak before he signed on.

But he did the right thing.

Those who accuse him of being a "traitor" or a "Judas" are advancing an agenda that has little to do with abortion, and more to do with being a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican party.

8. Kids that are born into abject poverty are prime victims for sexual abuse.
How dare that the government interfere with the priests' prime resource for sexual abuse. Its the kids of single moms that are great fonder for some intense Catholic styled sex education. "Stupid" reneged on his promise to continue an uninterrupted supply since an Executive Order can be overturned by the next president. What we want is absolute assurance that our source doesn't dry up. By the way we are strongly opposed to abuse of young boys, Wink, Wink.

11. Oh, this is fresh
coming from them just as we (again) read about how their child rapist priests got away with their evil deeds.

They do not have the moral authority, or any authority any more.
