1. "God" doesn't hate anything.
And there's all sorts of crazy stuff in the Bible, some of which even the fundies don't believe -- like most of Leviticus.

5. So what? Like I said -- the Bible is full of goofy stuff,
Edited on Thu Aug-05-10 06:55 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
mostly the folklore, myths and traditions of some ancient Middle Eastern tribes, and a lot of it is contradictory as well as weird. And I don't consider it to be in any respect the word of "god," what/whoever that is. So if the Bible says divorce is wrong, or forbidden, or a sin, or whatever, I say, so what?

12. Much of the bible is hatred and delusions IMO and it's also a book of ancient politics. I could
give a F what the bible says about anything.

3. depends
Never permissible:
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Matthew 19:6

Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery. -- Mark 10:11

Whosoever putteth away his wife and marrieth another, committeth adultery. -- Luke 16:18

Only when the wife is unfaithful:
Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery. -- Matthew 5:32

Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery. -- Matthew 19:9

When the 'unbelieving' partner chooses to leave
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. -- 1 Corinthinians 7:15

When the husband is displeased with his wife
When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. -- Deuteronomy 24:1-2

Things got more strict in the New Testament, basically.

4. Jesus was pretty adamant that divorced women should never remarry
but what the hell, boys will be boys so they can form and then abandon as many families as they want.

Of course, it's a puzzle to me why any woman who's been through a bad marriage would ever want another one, but to each his own.

10. Wrong
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery" (Luke 16:18)

13. Matthew was a little different
5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

In other words, he could go marry a younger model but not an ex wife. Oh, and if he threw a wife away just because, she was branded the adulteress, seems more than a little unfair, especially when he was committing the adultery.

Of course, part of the problem is undoubtedly the KJV translation, but sexism is alive and well in that book and was during the time it was written in the original language(s).

19. I see you're picking & choosing
I thought we weren't allowed to do that.

These passages regarding divorce have always troubled me, because they conflict with Jesus' main teachings of love & forgiveness.

20. And they conflict somewhat with each other
You'd think these guys would have gotten together and argued it out before any of them wrote it down, but maybe that's why it took 100 years until after he was dead. Then the whole thing suffered through a series of bad translations.

And yes, it's at odds with everything else he said, so one wonders if they didn't just stick it in at random so it wouldn't be too big a shock to the patriarchs to give up all control over women.

It's always been my contention that anything that sticks up like a sore thumb probably doesn't belong there. These quotes are one thing. The abrupt break with the Elhoistic part of Genesis into the clumsy Yawhistic is another.

22. Actually scholarship has proven that the opposite is true

Where Jesus says something like the 'Golden Rule' then while it is possible he said it but it is not very consequential because many others said it.

Where it seems abrupt and jarring, especially to the first century ear, then it is more likely to be a close proximity to what was actually said, as gospel writers and scribes were more likely to try and make harsh statements seem more acceptable by changing them.

For example the telling of the violence brought on by Jesus at the temple is probably a very accurate depiction because it seems so inconsistent with his message. The harder it is to reconcile a particular passage the more authentic it is likely to be.

The first 5 books of the old testament are edited parts of Elohim, YHWH and other sources.

As for 'getting together and arguing it out', you misunderstand their purpose. They had no intention of writing biographic records for future generations. Each writer was writing for contemporaries.

Mark came first and reasonably soon after Jesus. It appears that he was trying to collect the most important messages of Jesus before the first generation of Christians passed away. Matthew is writing a type of chatechism for the young Church and Luke is writing for an authority or authorities outside of the Church in order to explain the sect and try and gain legitimacy. That is why picking and hunting for verse confirmation the way that the fundies do is so meaningless. The verses should be understood in the context of what the author wanted to achieve as a part of his total message.

14. My sis-in-law
who's a devout Baptist has always claimed that Gog hates divorce, so she stayed with her abusive husband. She said, "When God thinks I've had enough, he'll take Max out."

Finally, after giving him cancer and making him suffer unimaginable pain for a couple of years, God took Max out.

I don't get "God" people. I could never be one. Atheism suits me very well.

18. Reminds me of when my sister's now ex-husband used to beat her and she told
me if only she were a better wife he would not have to beat her.

I talked some sense into her, she divorced him and was happy ever after with her new husband who was not a wife beater and a nice guy.

One more reason why I could give a F what the bible or religion says about anything. One has to lead ones own life and make decisions, not let some ancient book tell one what to do IMO.

17. Nobody likes divorce except for lawyers.
It's just a drag. You will find even in the most Biblically conservative churches an acceptance of divorce under certain circumstances. Just being a selfish jerk isn't really a good reason, even though it causes more divorces than anything. The quote from Malachi isn't necessarily dealing with marriage counseling.

Malachi 2:16
16 "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.

Context is king in Bible study. Malachi is some interesting reading.
