13-year-old Canadian girl beaten to death for refusing to pray

Dad in custody after daughter, 13, dies
Girl refused to say prayers with father: neighbours
By Brian Daly, QMI Agency

MONTREAL — A 13-year-old girl whose beating death led to the arrest of her 71-year-old father had enraged him by refusing to say her prayers, according to neighbours.

Noutene Sidime died Saturday evening in suburban Longueuil, Que., three days after she was rushed to hospital unconscious and bleeding from her nose.

Her father, Moussa Sidime, had called 911 last Wednesday. Sidime was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, but the charges could be upgraded, police said.

<snip>

There were tears and tributes at Sidime’s high school Tuesday as students returning from the long weekend gathered by the hundreds in the schoolyard. They released balloons and remembered a happy girl who was once honoured as the coolest student in her class.

Nouténé Sidimé, 13, died over the weekend after being allegedly slapped by her father. (Facebook)

7. All religions have
their extremist factions....but I find nothing in the article that states these people followed Christianity. Christianity is not the only religion that observes the use of daily prayers. A tragedy regardless of what religion.

16. Some might take the position (myself included).....
...that all religions are "extreme" in the sense that to accept them as true, it requires that one suspend rationality and an adherence to the laws of nature in order to believe what is found within their holy texts.

Thank you.

17. I had to search through a dozen articles...
but this one hints that they are Muslim. Or, her father was at least.

19. Honestly, how is that "bashing" christianity?
The poster in question sarcastically posted a complaint made by scads of christians and mocked the absurdity of that complaint. How is that "bashing"?

22. So you respond to perceived insensitivity
with insensitivity? Doesn't make much sense.

But you really need to get a thicker skin. That comment (Christians being persecuted) is all over GD right now in the miracle thread. It is rather ironic that the vast majority is claiming persecution by a small, powerless minority (that is the most disliked and hated minority in the US).

AM I supposed to be sensitive the the bigotry, to the hate, to the pedophilia, to the racism and all of the other terrible things that christianity promotes and condones?

THAT kind of sensitivity?

10. Well, isn't this special...
Most press accounts are just repeating the father's story - he only "slapped" the girl and she mysteriously lapsed into a coma and died. So I'm reading "slapped" as "beat the shit out of."

BTW, as this story notes, the father was an architect with multiple college degrees, including one from Columbia.

And the family says he's a great guy, so we should probably just let him go and chalk it up to Allah's will, I guess...

Accused praised as family mentor

The extended family of a 71-year-old man charged with aggravated assault in the death of his 13-year-old daughter has rallied in support of both the victim and the alleged perpetrator.

They carefully avoided any hint of blame yesterday and spoke glowingly of Moussa Sidime's commitment to his family even as they poured out their love for his dead daughter, Noutene Sidime...

Two years ago, Noutene won a mathematics prize and was making plans to follow her sisters academically, hoping to become a lawyer.

The accused was described as the family cornerstone, an architect with degrees from Columbia University in New York and Universite Laval in Quebec City.

They endorsed his character and contribution to family members' educational aspirations, saying he was the family member who advised relatives here, in the United States and in West Africa.
