Hoo boy, I just learned about a new group of Christofascists
They call themselves the 'Restoration Christianity', although what they're restoring is stupidity.

Get this:

- They believe the Earth is Flat, because that's what the bible says. I would love to take one of these guys on a round the world flight, although they'd probably say it was 'debbils' out there.

- They believe modern astronomy is false, and has faked any and all parts of the space program.

- They believe PI, the mathematical concept of Pi AKA 3.14blah blah blah is false. Because the bible says you should use the number 3 (magical and trinitarian!) instead of pi. Remind me never to hire a contractor who practises this religion.

- Of course the usual, world=sin=everyone out there is either a hooker, a fag or a member of the conspiracy

- This one is fun too: Democracy is a sin, because we should just use the bible as lawmaker, judge, jury, etc...

- And this one really makes me scratch my head: Antarctica doesn't exist. All those photos are of Alaska or something....

-----------------------------

To my beloved DU Christian Friends: Can you do something about these people? And all the other self-described Christians who prefer stupidity to reality...could you tell them to stop?

1. Anyone who bases their entire moral compass
on a book that was written 2000 years ago and translated hundreds and hundreds of times... is an idiot.

We used to play a game called Telephone in the third grade. All the kids stood in a line and the first kid whispered something to the second kid, then the message was passed down the line and the last kid wrote the message on the board. Not one fucking time was the message that got passed down even close to the original message. I always thought that exercise was supposed to teach us something. Apparently it went over a lot of heads.

Nothing but 2,000-3,000 year old Bronze Age mythology in that book.

2. I'm gobsmacked.
Really? The world is flat, because the bible says so? Since when did a work of fantasy, written by man to support his needs for an authoritarian figure, manage to become a science, mathematics and law textbook?

My head hurts.....and not just because of this, but this kind of thing doesn't do a thing for the injury. It almost makes me want to go back to the tile wall I fell against and bang my head a few more times, just to see if it feels better when I stop.

7. The Bible has many authors, not just one.
Then, there's all those translations, not to mention changes, deletions, and that whole Council of Nicea thing. I've heard of these people - careful, they get pissed when you start laughing hysterically.

plural usage. think mankind. And I laugh hysterically often.....when my head isn't hurting like this. My dam skull feels cracked. I'm assured it isn't, but any temper tantrums or laughing jags won't help. I'm supposed to 'be sedate.'

16. Where does the Bible say the world is flat?
I don't know the whole book, but I've never heard that addressed. I never heard a word about pi, either. These people are getting their theology out of their anuses, not just their science.

27. pi=3 in 2 Chronicles 4:2
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 10:06 PM by laconicsax
Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and five cubits the height thereof; and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about.

Diameter of 10 cubits, circumference of 30, pi=3

30. The flatness is based on the statement that the earth has four corners,
suggesting that it is square. This is mentioned in Genesis and Isaiah, perhaps elsewhere. Genesis also mentions the pillars of the earth, whatever those are, probably holding the square up.

Fits in with most world globes, don't you think?

8. Are you sure it's not Reconstructionist Christianity?
Sounds like it's right up their alley, although Reconstructionists also promote the idea of a church-driven economic system as well.

9. Reconstructionists want to establish a theocracy
I think that's one of their goals, but the science, and well, enlightenment denial runs strong in this church.

I think the Reconstructionists at least believe in pi and the Earth's roundness.

Sojourners is trying. Bishop Spong of the Episcopal church has been vocal against the hate this type spews as have many others. Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a minister as well as a lawyer. Sadly, we don't get the press that the Westboro hate-mongers get. It's supremely frustrating.

25. If you ask 2 Christians a theological question, you will get 3 answers in response.
Me? I try to live by the example Jesus set as a social, nay, socialIST liberal.

I don't agree with many others on that, but that is OK. I am following what I believe is right and the example set for us.

Matthew 25:45 {Jesus said} `I assure you, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.'

HCR, Unemployment, foreclosure assistance, social safety nets, homelessness, mental illness, social stigmatization....

Your flat-earther friend (and his "I got mine, yer on yer own" tea-party set) may be in for a huge awakening one day.

26. I used to be a Christian
I wanted emperical evidence, and you and I both know that just isn't part of Christianity, or any religion. That's fine - I just don't want any infringements on my liberty to not believe.

But I know what you mean - Jesus was a Socialist, and the early Christian church was Socialist (more like Communist) until Paul. Then it went into a splintering, and eventually Constantine declared it illegal to be any religion but his specific version of Christianity. And his 'interpretation' was not socialist. It was divine right of kings all the way.

For me - as long as you and I share the same ethical foundations (golden rule, do onto others, acceptance and respect of diversity) then that's all I need.

31. Sounds like our ethics are in line with one another.
Pity faith has been hijacked by psychos and pseudo-egos who think they know more than the written word.

You are right on the other account. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Not empirical evidence. The Lord asks us for trust. It is the difficult at times. I understand.

34. flat earth
they obviously have not read Psalms 103: "As far as the East is from the West...” the only way that line can be interpreted is from the perspective of a spherical world. In such a world if you start off traveling in an easterly direction and circumnavigate the world, at no point do you end up traveling west. Although you may end up in the western hemisphere you did not arrive there by traveling west

See eg http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7540427.stm

Don't bother trying to come up with further arguments against their worldview; we all know they're wrong, and they just go 'la-la-la' when anyone says anything to disprove them,
