New Ala. gov: Just Christians are his family
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 11:16 AM by humblebum
This defies comment. It is idiots like this who make it hard for ALL Christians.

"Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.

"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News."

1. Sounds like my sister.
I am her only caregiver and she rides me like a pony over the 'Christian' issue. These people are very ....well I can't think a nice way to put it. It is a sickness. What gives a christian the right to judge others. That right there gets you kicked out of the club, as I understand it!

For Koresh's sake, this guy is the GOVERNOR of a U.S. STATE. I find it incredible that Christians in this very forum think that people like him are some tiny minority fringe and can be ignored.

3. He might be reminded of their state constitution...they surely have one...
which will surely remind him that he serves ALL people.

Bizarre.

8. You don't think he's representative of Christianity,
yet you think Stalin is representative of atheism.

Newsflash: it's not just people like *him* that make it hard for Christians.

10.  They both represent radical, militant elements of their respective
POV's. When I challenge an atheist's POV it is because it is a radical, sometimes fanatical or irrational anti-religious view.

11. So what atheist on here has espoused "radical, sometimes fanatical"...
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 01:49 PM by trotsky
views such as executing Christians, like Stalin did? (Leaving aside for the moment your woeful inability to understand *why* Stalin did that.)

What if you extend your search to all Americans?

Now, what if you polled American Christians to find out how many agree with the newly-elected governor of Alabama?

Put those two figures together, and tell me truly WHICH viewpoint is the "radical" one. (I.e., held by an extreme minority of said group.)

I shall await your results. And do show me what a good Christian can be like, won't you?

12. When people like Hitchens call for "ridicule, hatred, and contempt for religion"-

that I consider to be militant as well as those who condone such behavior. Do you really want to go down this road of tit for tat again?

13. You seem to have confused the difference between an idea and actual people.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 02:40 PM by cleanhippie
Hitchens, from your own quote, hates RELIGION, not the PEOPLE who follow religion. The Gov. of Alabama does not like PEOPLE who do not follow his religion.

Hopefully, you can see the difference. Hating an idea is very different from hating people.

Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 03:04 PM by cleanhippie
Hate, dislike, intolerance, pick your word, it all means the same. If you cannot be honest enough to have an adult conversation, what are you doing here.

I think my point is made regarding my first response. Care to comment on the point being made?

21. We are certainly not splitting hairs here. Hitchens has also many times directed his
remarks directly at a particular person(s). This guy did not express either dislike nor hatred for any single person. What he said in his capacity as a governor is absolute stupidity for any number of obvious reasons.

22. Ugh, its inpossible to have a rational conversation with you.
Your unwillingness to see the bigger picture and grasp complex subjects has bored me. When you are ready to sit at the grown-ups table, let me know, as I am saving a seat for you.

17. False equivalency, which you should already know by now.
The governor is judging people exclusively based on faith. Stalin's insanity centered around the acquisition of absolute power. There is no similarity between the two.

26. Nice to see you found a radical Christian, being as how they are so rare
Without a core spiritual philosophy, all atheism is left with is hatred of religion. Atheism, of course, is devoid of values, which leads to a much higher ratio of radical atheists to radical Christians.

I seem to recall another Alabama governor, popular with his constituents, who embarrassed the state on a national scale with regards to equality...

27. It's not like he wants to KILL us unbelievers or anything...
Oh, wait a second, let me check that in the Big Book Of Justice 'n Miracles...

They sacrificed to the LORD on that day, from the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep. And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul; and that whoever would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman. They took oath to the LORD with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with horns. - 2 Chronicles 15:11-14

Never mind.
