Why I don't believe in god (A respectful conversation on the many holes of modern religion)
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 11:34 AM by Dash87
Of course, with all due respect to everybody who does. I think it's great that people are religious and do good things in the name of religion. If you are religious, then good for you. I'm not going to say that you're wrong, because there's no way I could possibly know that. However, I disagree completely. I'm not out to offend anybody. I'm going to talk about Christianity here, but I'm not purposely picking on Christians. I just grew up Christian, so that's the only real religion I have experience with.

However, my main problem with religion (and specifically Christianity) is that, when reading the bible, it's so human that's painful. What I mean by this is that you can tell the Bible (in my opinion) is nothing more than a collection of folk tales written by flawed humanity. For example:

- God is extremely human, and has many of the flaws humans do. He gets jealous, he kills (the flood story - he basically used a holy WMD to kill everybody but one man and one woman). There's many examples in the Bible of God acting like a human.

- Religious leaders throughout history, and right now, act like any other human. Christianity is basically a corporation, with the Pope being the CEO (sorry if this offends, once again it's my opinion). Religion and politics was always intertwined.

- Along with the concept that religion and politics are intertwined, the Bible has been hacked up over so many centuries that worshipping it now is pointless. People added their family names in there over time to make it look like they had some kind of important past. Other elements were also added or excluded for political reasons throughout history. So, when you're reading the Bible now, you're not reading 'what God said.' You're reading what a bunch of corrupt people added to it over time (Once again, no offense).

- There is also the issue with translation, and the lingo and slang of the time it was written. How can we be sure the Bible is to be taken so literally?

- Many of the elements in the Bible appear in stories written before the Bible, such as floods.

- God is refered to as a human male. This is the most ridiculous portion, imo. I'm not sure if it's like that in the Bible, but it just shows a patriarchical hole in modern Christianity.

However, I find the concept of religion really interesting. I just don't believe in any of them, but I think religion can be good for a society. Any other athiests or agnostics that were raised Christian? I don't know too too much about the Bible, but I just see it like I see the story of Gilgamesh - a bunch of interesting tall tales that never happened.

If you're offended by this, sorry. I was hoping to see what people on here think about the many glaring holes in the modern religion. This is not intended to be a Christian-bashing fest. Let's be respectful and have a respectful conversation about modern religion (or not if this is lock-worthy). :)

1. It seems your problem is with the Bible, not God.
We all have different taste in literature.

3. It's the Bible I like, but taking it seriously to me is like taking any folk tale seriously

Once again, no offense to anyone here. Reading it like a story makes for a good story. Reading it for some guidance in life leads to a story full of holes and tall tales.

5. True.
Many believers would tell you that the Bible is metaphorical, not to be taken literally all the time. You don't have to believe in talking animals to understand what Aesop was trying to say.

27. But the religious stop at the metaphor including god.
THAT can't be a metaphor, according to many that hold that position. Once we step into metaphor land, there is very little to nothing that stops that metaphor from including there being a god.

29. OK, which bits of the metaphor do you accept?
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 02:59 PM by intaglio
The metaphors about of a vindictive spiteful deity, found throughout the OT? Probably not.

The metaphors about a rabbi who taught about peace and love by inciting his followers to abandon their wives and children or to buy swords? The possible rabbi who never condemned the OT but asked people to keep to its' laws?

Or do you just accept the pretty bits like the Beatitudes and the magic bits about healing? Do you like the idea that an all powerful, all knowing deity sent his son to be tortured until the life flew from the abused body?

Show me the metaphors that you support and I'll show you ideas first thought of by non-Christians sometimes centuries before your bible or ideas based on a vengeful deity with a hatred for "his" creation.

32. Yes it does. You specified that
...many people accept the bible as metaphorical but my point is that if you are part of that group you have to decide what metaphors you accept. The bible is full of things that can be accepted as metaphor, the tale of Balaam and his Ass amongst them, but is the tale of the Exodus also metaphorical? If Exodus is metaphorical what does the slaughter of the first born mean, in that metaphor?

With the New Testament you are on very shaky ground, for every Christian denomination insists that the sacrifice upon the cross was really, not metaphorically, the sacrifice of the Son of God and arguing that Jesus was only "metaphorically" the son of God means you are not a Christian. If you insist upon the point then you need a new classification, say, small "c" christian, but then your metaphor of a person who stands for the son of God falls because of the actions and words attributed to that person and the deity of which he was, metaphorically, a part.

What I usually find is that people arguing for the metaphor are happy with the "nice" bits of the Bible and first amongst these are the Beatitudes. The trouble is that the Beatitudes are not original, they have been a part of many faiths. The Dead Sea Scrolls record them as an Essene teaching predating Jesus. It can even be argued that the earliest record of the Beatitudes were Buddhist.

31. You might like Ernst Bloch's "Atheism in Christianity." Bloch was 20th century
German Marxist and atheist, who wrote "Atheism in Christianity" very late in his life. Bloch and his Polish third wife had some Jewish ancestry, hence fled Germany in the Nazi era, though they returned after the war.

Bloch seems to have liked the Bible very much, while simultaneously disliking the Church and disliking also the view that the Bible should simply be discarded as a collection of prescientific fairytales. As an atheist, of course, he does not read the text literally; and as a modernist, he cannot ignore the contradictions he finds in the text

The result is a very dense book: it reads almost like a series of notes to himself, that he might have developed into maybe a thousand short essays. The book oscillates between impossibly obscure, very insightful, and amazingly lyrical passages. Even the chapter and section headings are informative: "Prometheus a Myth Too" or "Christ's Secret Name is Son of Man, Not Son of God"

I have found the book worthwhile though very slow-going. I certainly do not understand every word he writes, and his constant changes of direction are exhausting. But I also find it extremely informative

The Pastors paid willing homage to the power which had crucified the first Christian heretic -- it was, after all, often their own power. But to the poor and the exploited and the deprived they preached patient tolerance not force ... "They deck out the altars and the poor suffer bitter hunger" -- Amos' words have always been relevant, and generally in vain ... Marx said: "To be radical is to grasp things at their roots. But the root of all (viz. social) things is man." The first letter of John (3:2) also takes man as the root: "It does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure." ... If these two tests had ever come face to face, the encounter would have shed a searching utopian light on the problem of universal alienation and its possible cure ... It would be a strange meeting -- but, then, why not?

4. Bible/God same difference
If you ditch the Bible, when what forms your idea of God?

Nature? What a sick God then

All of us? Yeah, that's not schizophrenic

The good in all of us? That makes absolutely no sense

I jettisoned the idea of God a few years ago, right after 9/11 actually

9/11 Showed that taking the side of "God" (which is just a figment of ones imagination, based upon a father figure or group of father figures in real life) is dangerous. It creates an existential dillemma where one's personal "truth" outweighs the collective truth, leading to murder, rape, etc

You could actually argue that 9/11 wasn't about religion at all.
(Wait what!?!?) you yell.

Well, nowhere in the Koran does it say kill yourself and everybody around you. The Koran is a book of love and peace (and a folk tale, just like the Bible). The violent parts in the Koran and Bible are there because the time they were written in was very violent. That's why, imo, they shouldn't be taken literally for modern guidance. They're both so culturally influenced, it's obvious.

However, the Koran has been used for political reasons, just like the Bible has. That's why I don't blame a particular religion for anything.

8. "The Koran is a book of love and peace" WTF????
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 11:46 AM by Taverner
Have you ever even read the Koran?

Here's a good place to start: http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/

Here's a little sample:

Those who purchase disbelief at the price of faith harm Allah not at all, but theirs will be a painful doom.--3:177

1. "Show us the straight path, The path of those whom Thou hast favoured; Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray."
Muslims generally interpret "those whom Allah has favored," "those who earn Allah's anger," and "those who go astray" as Muslims, Jews, and Christians, respectively. 1:6-7

2. Don't bother warning the disbelievers. Allah has made it impossible for them to believe so that he can torture them forever after they die. 2:6-7

3. Allah has sickened the hearts of disbelievers and increased their disease. He is a spiritual anti-doctor. 2:10

4. Allah has blinded the disbelievers. "Allah taketh away their light and leaveth them in darkness, where they cannot see, Deaf, dumb and blind." 2:17-18

5. If you try to compose a surah that is better than those in the Quran, and then fail, Allah will burn you forever if you in the fire that he has prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is men and stones. 2:24 <

6. They who disbelieve, and deny Our revelations, such are rightful Peoples of the Fire. They will abide therein." 2:39

7. Allah stamped wretchedness upon the Jews because they killed the prophets and disbelieved Allah's revelations. 2:61

8. Allah turned Sabbath-breaking Jews into apes to be despised and hated. All modern Jews are descendants of apes (or all modern apes are descendants of Sabbath-breaking Jews). 2:65-66

9. Christians and Jews (who believe in only part of the Scripture), will suffer in this life and go to hell in the next. 2:85

10. "Allah has cursed them for their unbelief."
Because I disbelieve in his bullshit, Allah has cursed me, along with nearly six billion other non-Muslims. 2:88

11. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers. 2:89

12. "They have incurred anger upon anger. For disbelievers is a shameful doom." 90

13. Jews are the greediest of all humankind. They'd like to live 1000 years. But even that "would by no means remove the doom." 2:96

14. Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers. 2:98

15. Allah has revealed "clear tokens." Only evil people are disbelievers. 2:99

16. "For disbelievers is a painful doom." 2:104

17. Don't question anything Muhammed says or choose disbelief over faith. 2:108

18. The Jews and Christians know damn well that the Muslims are right, so they try to make Muslims disbelievers because they envy the truth that they know the Muslims have. 2:109

19. "But those who keep their duty to Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection." 2:212

20. Allah will make disbelievers' lives miserable in this world and torture them forever after they die. 2:114

21. "And thou wilt not be asked about the owners of hell-fire." (They are the non-muslims.) 2:119

22. Disbelievers are losers. 2:121

23. Allah will leave the disbelievers alone for a while, but then he will compel them to the doom of Fire. 2:126

24. "Who forsaketh the religion of Abraham save him who befooleth himself?"
Cited in the Hamas Charter (Article 27) to condemn the idea of a secular state. 2:130

25. Allah will curse those who "hide the proofs and the guidance" that he revealed. But how can you hide things that don't exist? There are no proofs anywhere in the Quran and whatever guidance is there is almost always bad. 2:159

26. Those who disbelieve in the Quran, for whatever reason, are cursed by Allah, the angels, and men combined. So every good Muslim must join Allah and the angels in cursing nonbelievers. 2:161

27. The doom of the disbelievers will not be lightened. 2:162

28. "Those who disbelieve Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense." 2:171

29. Those who hide the Scripture will have their bellies eaten with fire. Theirs will be a painful doom. 2:174

30. How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire! 2:175

31. If someone murders your slave, then you get to kill one of his. If it was a male that was killed, you kill one of the killer's male slaves. If a female, you kill a female. Murder for murder. Slave for slave. It all works out swell with Allah's wondrous rules. (Oh, and if you don't follow them, you'll have the usual painful doom.) 2:178

32. Kill disbelievers wherever you find them. If they attack you, then kil them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. (But if they desist in their unbelief, then don't kill them.) 2:191-2

33. Allah says that you must keep fighting until there is no more persecution and everyone on earth is a Muslim. Then you can stop killing people. 2:193a

34. But if there are any wrong-doers around after you've killed off all the disbelievers, persecutors and aggressors, then you'll have to kill them too. 2:193b

35. Those who fail in their duty to Allah are proud and sinful. They will all go to hell. 2:206

36. "But those who keep their duty to Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection." 2:212

37. War is ordained by Allah, and all Muslims must be willing to fight, whether they like it or not. 2:216

38. It's you and your religion against them and theirs. They won't stop fighting until they make you a "renegade from your religion" and if they succeed in that so you die in disbelief, Allah will burn you forever in the Fire. 2:217

39. Intermarriage is forbidden. 2:221

40. "The disbelievers, they are the wrong-doers." 2:254

41. Disbelievers worship false gods. The will burn forever in the Fire. 2:257

42. Allah does not guide disbelievers. 2:264

43. "Give us victory over the disbelieving folk." 2:286

44. Those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, theirs will be a heavy doom. 3:4

45. Those who disbelieve will be fuel for the Fire. 3:10

46. Those who disbelieve shall be overcome and gathered unto Hell. 3:12

47. Non-muslims will be punished by Allah for their nonbelief. 3:19

48. "If they surrender, then truly they are rightly guided, and if they turn away, then it is thy duty only to convey the message."
(The message for those who won't surrender is "you're going to hell.") 3:20

49. Those who disbelieve, promise them a painful doom. 3:21

50. "They say: The Fire will not touch us save for a certain number of days. That which they used to invent hath deceived them regarding their religion." (The Fire will burn them forever.) 3:24

51. Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. 3:28

52. Allah loveth not the disbelievers. 3:32

53. Allah will punish disbelievers in this world and the next. They will have no helpers. 3:56

54. Don't believe anyone who is not a Muslim. 3:73

55. "Allah will neither speak to them nor look upon them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He make them grow. Theirs will be a painful doom." 3:77

56. All non-Muslims will be rejected by Allah after they die. 3:85

57. Apostates will be cursed by Allah, angels, and men. They will have a painful doom. 3:86-88

58. Disbelievers will have a painful doom. And they will have no helpers. 3:91

59. Disbelievers will have their faces blackened on the last day. They will face an awful doom. 3:105-6

60. Why does Allah like Muslims so much? Because they are the best people on earth, they behave themselves, forbid indecency, and believe in Allah. Allah loves people who believe in him. (Most Non-muslims are "evil-livers.") 3:110

61. Those who disbelieve will be burnt in the Fire. 3:116

62. Don't be friends with non-Muslims. They all hate you and want to ruin you. 3:118

63. The Fire is prepared for disbelievers. 3:131

64. Give us victory over the disbelieving folk. 3:147

65. Do not obey disbelievers. 3:149

66. We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Their habitation is the Fire 3:151

67. "Is one who followeth the pleasure of Allah as one who hath earned condemnation from Allah, whose habitation is the Fire?"
Unbelievers will burn forever in the Fire. 3:162

68. Theirs will be an awful doom. 3:176

69. Disbelievers do not harm Allah, but will have a painful doom. 3:177

76. "Allah knoweth best (who are) your enemies." 4:45

77. "Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not." 4:46

78. Christians and Jews must believe what Allah has revealed to Muhammad or Allah will disfigure their faces or turn them into apes, as he did the Sabbath-breakers. (See 2:65-66) 4:47

79. Those who ascribe a partner to Allah (like Christians do with Jesus and the Holy Spirit) will not be forgiven. They have "invented a tremendous sin." 4:48, 4:116

80. Allah curses those that invent lies about him, believe in idols and false deities, claim to be more rightly guided, or whatnot (like the Christians and Jews). 4:50-52

81. Apostates are going to hell. 4:55

82. Unbelievers will be tormented forever with fire. When their skin is burned off, a fresh skin will be provided. 4:56

83. Oppose those that refuse to obey. 4:60-63

84. The hypocrites refuse to die for Allah and Muhammad. 4:66

85. Those who obey Allah and Muhammad are favored by Allah. They are the best company. 4:69

86. Allah will bestow a vast reward on those who fight in religious wars. 4:74

87. Believers fight for Allah; disbelievers fight for the devil. So fight the minions of the devil. 4:76

88. "Whoso obeyeth the messenger hath obeyed Allah, and whoso turneth away: We have not sent thee as a warder over them." 4:80

89. "So fight (O Muhammad) in the way of Allah ... Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve."
So fight for Allah. Allah will always rig the battle so that Muslims will defeat non-Muslims. 4:84

90. Allah casts the hypocrites back to disbelief. Don't try to guide those that Allah sends astray. 4:88

91. Have no unbelieving friends. Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them. 4:89

92. If the unbelievers do not offer you peace, kill them wherever you find them. Against such you are given clear warrant. 4:91

93. Believers shouldn't kill believers, unless by mistake. If you kill a believer by mistake, you must set free a believing slave. 4:92

94. Believers who kill believers will go to hell. 4:93

95. After non-Muslims die, they will make excuses for their unbelief -- like saying that they were oppressed. Then the angels will ask them, "Why didn't you move to another country?" But the angels won't wait for an answer. They'll just take them all to hell. 4:97

104. For the hypocrites there will be a painful doom. 4:138

10. There are good and bad elements, just like the Bible.
However, also remember that this was at a time where wars and killing were all over the place.

I've never read more than a little bit fo the Koran, but it's not any more violent than most other religious books.

12. They're both books that celebrate genocide, antisemitism, racism, murder, torture...
Sure, both say some nice things, but the 'good things' are in the minority. When those books were written, life was cheap and death was common. So those books reflected that world and mentality.

13. I'm sure if you looked at the culture in which these books were written,
you would find that they are products of them.

That's one of the problems I mentioned above (I think). The two books we're talking about are very "human."

22. did you read those, or just cut n paste?
99.9 (I say without counting - I only read the first hundred or so) talk about what Allah will do with disbelievers - not what he instructs his followers to do.

There is a HUGE difference between "You are going to hell" and "I'm sending you to hell in the name of my god".

All that crap is no different from Old Testament bible verses talking about how god will punish the wicked - few demand that (unlike in Leviticus) the people wreak vengeance upon to wicked - they leave it in Allah's hands. Of course, fundies mis-read those verses as being instructions rather than commentary, just like christian fundies do.

That list does not list the citings of how "people of the Book" (i.e. Christians and Jews) are to be respected and honored. How women are to be honored and exalted. Not to mention, the traditional Islamic greeting of "Peace be upon you".

There is a difference between being an atheist and being a religion hater.

7. A lot of highly intelligent, Christian people do not believe that the Bible was written by God.
If you believed in God prior to 9/11, was it the Bible that convinced that God existed, or did you have some notion of God before reading the Bible?

Believing in higher beings is part of the genetic code of a lot of people. They don't need an old book (or a new one) to convince them. Likewise, abandoning God in the aftermath is similarly typical.

11. Before 9/11, I was on the fence about God
I thought there could be something, but nothing like the Bible's God

I knew that was all made up since I graduated from college

But I was of the mistaken belief that faith helps people makes them stronger, etc

Then 9/11 happened and religion's true face showed. Christianity and Islam are Death Cults, ghoulishly gloating not unlike "Rev" Phelps and his slime. Praying hard for the day when everyone dies, and they get to watch the unbelievers torture forever.

21. The bible was written by men
And was thus prone to the prejudices, perception, biases etc of men. It was also censored by the powers that be (certain books excluded e.g. some of the stuff found at nag hammadi etc.)

I have no idea if God exists. I would expect nothing less than the bible being a reflection of the men who wrote it, whether inspired by an actual god or not.

I do know it is some of the best literature ever written, and one of the most referenced.

It's always "he"

never "she" or "it"

Our modern Bible has gone through centuries of whitewash in a patriarchical society. This is one of the huge problems I have with it. :)

6. The response to most all of your points is the same.
Every Christian picks the parts of the bible they like, and believes those, and simply rejects the parts they don't like. From MLK to Fred Phelps, this is always the same.

14. Yep
And I feel sorry for an honorable man like Rep Keith Ellison, who trys so hard to show Islam as a religion of peace. But he's looking for a needle in a haystack (or rather a piece of hay in a needle stack) that might not even be there.

Now I would agree if you were to tell me many Muslims are men and women of peace, and many Christians are as well, but in those cases we are celebrating the human, rather than the ideology.

God wouldn't have wanted to add just a little bit to it after thousands and thousands of years. All reference books get updated from time to time, except this one.

20. I'm just going to try to cover a few of your points.
1: I'm not here to offend either, that's why I don't go on why I don't follow other beliefs because it's bound to offend someone.
2: Of course The Bible is human, it's meant for humans. God certainly didn't need it.
3: This comparison is flawed, it's like an ant saying a human is an ant because they do some of the same things too. It ignores completely the matter of scale.
4: Leaders, the same as everyone else, will be responsible for their decisions, either in this world or the next. Just remember before you bash any organization, be sure the offender is following the rules of what they purport to be. I'm not Catholic, so any viewpoints on the Pope or Catholicism I leave to those Catholics who care to answer.
5: The problem with any thing that has been around a long time is that it is going to be written about again and again and translated into different languages. Will you disbelieve everything just because it is old and many folks have written on it?
6: The parts of The Bible that should be taken literally are the 10 Commandments and Christ's Testimony. Anything in there that conflicts with that is probably in there to be referred to as an example, a part of ancient Jewish history or just a side note.
Faith is a matter of choice, so choose for yourself. One other thing, you don't worship The Bible, you worship God.
7. The Bible is also many books of history as well as instruction. Consider the times when these parts were entered in, however, as before, The 10 Commandments still over rule any other interpretation.
8: God being referred to as male is more a trick of written language and past bias than anything. Asking if God is male or female is, again, like an ant asking a human if he is a black ant or a red one. God is above humanity, so really has no need of gender.
9: Religion is such a vast and wide topic, but the real question is, in what do you have faith? Also, just because something has been written about a lot isn't necessarily a good reason to disbelieve or discount something.
10: I'm not offended either. I just would like to point out if you're going to discount Christianity, then you need to find something that Christ said that causes you to do so, not some odd bit of past history in the Old Testament. Remember The Bible isn't just one book, but many.
The Bible is inerrant, but the people reading it aren't necessarily so. I am a Christian due to Christ's Testimony only. Without that I wouldn't have even paid attention to the rest.

23. The bible can be inerrant only if the people who have been re-writing
and editing it for the past 2500 years were themselves inerrant.

Was the bible inerrant when it still contained the Book of Enoch, the Gospel of Judas and the Gospel of Mary? Did removing those books by the Council of Nicea make it more inerrant than before?

If it is Christ's testimony that is only important, then of what importance in the inerrancy of the bible? And then, how do you know that he said what he said, when the Gospels were only written between forty and 120 years after his death? Do you remember word for word conversations from 50 years ago?

24. I'm not a Christian but I agree with most of what you said completely.
the people of faith that I love and respect are intelligent, independent, and do not believe God can be constrained or described in a book. They use the Bible to find inspiration, but do no worship a book. And the courage and love I've seen some of them demonstrate just blows me away.

35. I disagree with what you say about the Ten Commandments
I disagree with your statement: “The parts of The Bible that should be taken literally are the 10 Commandments and Christ's Testimony.”

In particular I very strongly think that the commandment which says to “honor your father and mother” is an example of something in the Bible that is wrong. And I think that it is very unfortunate that this particular commandment is one which is attributed to God and is one of the “Ten Commandments” which have come to lie in the center of traditional Western and Judeo-Christian morality.

The commandment to “honor your father and mother”, in the biblical text, is unconditional, and makes no exception if one’s parents are abusive, or are otherwise not deserving of honor.

In particular I think it is very wrong to say to a person who has or has had an abusive parent or parents that such a person has a duty to honor such parents.

If anything there should be a commandment to parents for them to treat their children with dignity and respect, that they (the children) might come to treat themselves and others with dignity and respect.

I would think that it is a much greater crime or sin to abuse or mistreat a child than it is to talk back to or to otherwise disrespect one’s parents. While not a parent myself, I would think that any good or competent parent, or any parent with any self-respect, would not need the backing of a commandment from God. If anything, I would think that it is bad parents, or http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553284347/drirensgetwithth">toxic parents, who would need to invoke the commandment when they are displeased with something their child says or does, or who would say or imply to a child that when the child displeases or dishonors his/her parents, the child is really displeasing, dishonoring, and disobeying God, or who would say or imply that an affront to one’s parents is an affront to God.

The recently deceased Swiss writer and psychotherapist http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Miller_%28psychologist%29">Alice Miller, in her http://www.alice-miller.com/books_en.php">books and on her http://www.alice-miller.com/index_en.php">web http://www.naturalchild.org/alice_miller/">sites, documents some of the consequences of exonerating or “forgiving” abusive parents, or absolving them of blame, in the name of the commandment to “honor your father and mother”.

I would think that one very obvious consequence would be that if a person has been taught from childhood to be mortally afraid of challenging or questioning one’s parents (under threat of punishment, and always reminded to always “honor your father and mother”), then that person is going to be afraid of questioning or challenging other authorities (religious, political, and otherwise) later in life. Alice Miller, particularly in her book http://www.nospank.net/fyog.htm">For Your Own Good, documents that this is the case both with leading figures in the Nazi regime and with many ordinary Germans who acclaimed and went along with Hitler. In fact she even has an http://www.nospank.net/fyog13.htm">entire chapter about Hitler himself and his brutal upbringing, particularly by his father.

And I think that exonerating abusive or http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553284347/drirensgetwithth">toxic parents, or absolving them from blame, and not confronting them, in the name of the commandment to “honor your father and mother”, is not any different from failing to prosecute Bush and Cheney for their crimes.

I feel very strongly about this because of my own very difficult relationship with my father, for which my being a Christian had been of no help to me. While my dad did many very nice things and many very good things, and was far from being the worst father anybody ever had, my dad was often extremely judgmental, and sometimes just bordered on being abusive. He often decided in Godlike fashion that I needed to be treated like I had committed a crime or a heinous sin if I had honestly forgotten something, made an honest mistake, or something was not quite up to his standards. And he would always say that whatever he said or did was done out of “love” and “http://www.nospank.net/fyog.htm">for my own good”. Though he would deny it, my dad often seemed to have the attitude that being father of his children and head of the house gave him certain arbitrary privileges. And if I were angry or upset with him or with something he said or did, it was always a problem with me, and never with him. He seemed to think that he could never be wrong. In fact one of his favorite jokes was “I may not always be right, but I am never wrong.”

I came to realize a little over a year after my dad died, 25 years ago now, that much of my dad’s behavior actually was abusive, or borderline so, and very disrespectful to me. I.e. it was not something wrong (or “sinful”) with me that I had problems with him, and was often angry with him or resented him (which anger and resentment spread to other people and other areas of my life).

And along with that realization came the realization that my being a Christian, and supposedly having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, had been of no help to me in enabling me to deal with my dad. And I don’t think it was simply unfortunate that Christianity turned out not to be of help. Christianity aggravated the problem with, among other things, the commandment to “honor your father and mother”, and with an admonition in Hebrews 12 which says to gladly accept the chastening of the Lord, like that of a “good” father, i.e. much like my father.

In fact my difficulty with my father, for which my being a Christian turned out to have been no help to me, was the single biggest thing which led me to become disenchanted with the Christian faith, and eventually to part company with the faith, and particularly to absolve myself of duties and obligations imposed by the faith (as opposed to those incumbent on any good or moral person), which is something I am happy about having done.

26. God is irrelevant.
It doesn’t matter if you derive your ethical code from an alleged deity, a holy book or simply The Golden Rule. What matters is moment to moment as you live your life, do you follow your code or do you abandon it? I don't need the motivation of reward or the fear of punishment to do what's right. I choose to do what's right because it's the right thing to do. If I choose not to do what's right, it's because I sold out my ethics. Only I can determine that I will do better in the future.

Many religious people feel that non-believers are immoral, simply because we don't believe, while they go about lying, stealing & being mean pricks. Morality is not about what you believe, it’s about how you behave.

The amount of blood, energy & time wasted on this alleged deity is stunniing. I wonder what our species could have accomplished without this distraction.

34. Religion is a flawed connection to the absolute -- of course there are holes.
The connection is flawed because we are humans. Numbering the holes in religion would be like naming the pot holes on a side street near your house. Why do it? You probably don't even need that road to get to any destination you select.

Hope your journey is fun.
