Tom Hanks to star in "Da Vinci Code" movie
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-11/16/content_2223572.htm

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks is expected to star in a film adapted from Dan Brown's popular novel "The Da Vinci Code," the Hollywood Reporter reported Monday.

Hanks, who will play the role of Robert Langdon, the professor who unravels the mystery, was the top choice for director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer, the report said. Columbia Pictures hopes to begin shooting the film next year.

Talks have begun for Hanks to join the project. "Tom is an exciting actor to watch thinking," Howard was quoted as saying. "We probably don't need his status from a box office standpoint, but he gives Langdon instant legitimacy."

10. Not just the fundies...
I'm a progressive Christian and far from a fundamentalist. But I find that novel not only offensive to my faith, but to my logical reason and historical knowledge. In terms of history, its "explanation" of the supposed great conspiracy at the heart of Christianity is as much a malicious lie as "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"...and could you imagine what the reaction would be if Ron Howard and Tom Hanks were announced as collaborators in an upcoming big-budget film adaptation of that work...?

11. I agree it can be offensive....
But it's their decsion to do this, and regardless of if we like it or not they must be allowed to express their views. I hope you understand...

14. I'm not familiar with "Protocols" and
I respect that the book offended you, but I do think it has some important points to make. Any book that gets people talking about the nature of their religion, or of religion in general, is a good thing. Also, I wrote a paper on the Da Vinci Code controversy, and in the process of my research, although the "accuracy" of the novel was not the topic of my analysis, found that the history is not wrong, so much as it is reinterpreted and reapplied. I believe that Dan Brown was willing to distort the interpretation of, or entirely reinterpret, recorded events in order to create an allegorical frame for the bigger questions: Who was Jesus, really? for one, but most importantly, Has Christianity remained true to what Christ taught? No offense, but it seems that for centuries, Christianity, even moderate Christianity, has been more about dogma and structures than about the message.

On a side note, did the film "Dogma" offend you too?

13. Russell Crowe, in my book
Actually, it was my hubby's suggestion when we were discussing it but I agreed.

For Sophie Nevue perhaps Monica Bellucci http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000899/
or Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity)

Harrison Ford is getting too old

15. I pictured Langdon as
having sort of a meek look. Russell Crowe, who I had thought would play Langdon, can do that, though he's thought of as a "tough-guy" actor (remember his performance in A Beautiful Mind. But Hanks can do it. I'm really happy to hear he is.

For the record, I loved the book.

17. I guess I am....
the only person in America who hasn't read this book. If somene wants controversy, read "The Body". It is one of the most profound books I have ever read but it is a thriller too. Also, spicy!
