Wayward Christian Soldiers

By CHARLES MARSH
Published: January 20, 2006
Charlottesville, Va.

Op-Ed Columnist: Who Is John Stott? By DAVID BROOKS. IN the past several years, American evangelicals, and I am one of them, have amassed greater political power than at any time in our history. But at what cost to our witness and the integrity of our message?

3. Oops didn't realize Brooks didn't write that article. My bad.
Sometimes my attention to detail is less than stellar.

2. I saw that article in the New York Times
while waiting for a flat tire to be fixed and thought it was excellent.

4. I'm an Atheist, but I do believe much of the heated discussion about
religion here on DU is explained in there. I'm also a Democrat and I've been disgusted with the whole Christian bunch because so many of them are following the * insanity. I know that it isn't all of them, but they are still a large part of the hard sell as to being anti-war. They also caused Bush to win by throwing their votes to the Republicans.

5. These quotes seem strangely related to that article...
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 03:30 AM by onager
--The worst government is the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression.

--It is not materialism that is the chief curse of the world, as pastors teach, but idealism. Men get into trouble by taking their visions and hallucinations too seriously.

--As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

(All quotes by H.L. Mencken)

6. I am a Christian and I loved Marsh's article
It saddens me to watch my fellow brother's and sister's inChrist foresake the Gospel as taught by Jesus. I am gladdened by some of the mainline churches who have stood up for the Gospel and have spoken out against the injustice, inhumanity and greed perpetrated by this administration.
