Can my Christian friends help me with this car fish question
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 11:55 AM by Goblinmonger
OK, I get this one

And I even get this one

Heck, I'll even go so far as to say I respect both of those. The first is a nice reminder of the oppression that Christians went through (the real stuff with the lions et. al.) and the second is linguistic in nature which tickles the English teacher in me a little bit.

But what is up with these two?

I mean, seriously, why do you need to have the cross and/or the jesus in there? Just in case you forget what the fish stands for?

Anyway, my random thoughts on a 20 minute commute.

Oh, and this one just bugs the crap out of me

I mean seriously, Truth? Ok, if the little fish was "Seahawks win the SuperBowl in 06" and the big one was Truth, I would get it. But Darwin? Wow.

2. On your commute did you also notice that the "fish cars"
were the rudest drivers?

Back in the day when I commuted 30 miles back and forth, I can't tell you how many times I said out loud "God saw that!".

bumper sticker; and the driver screamed "Asshole!" and gave her the finger.

10. I don't know about rude but they seem clueless about the
whole driving concept. If the rapture came and their cars really were emptied out, I'm not sure I'd notice the change.

7. You've only scratched the surface
Working backwards, the Darwin/Truth fish is a fundie backlash against another fish symbol with the word "Darwin" inside. That fish, of course, has legs. Then there's the one with the T-Rex eating the fundie fish.

I sense a little ligh-hearted fun in the Ichthyos fish. A fish with the word "fish" inside it, instead of XPISTOS (sorry, no sigma on my keyboard) or KYRIE.

As an enlightened, educated student of language, you reference the fact that early converts used the fish symbol as a means of sureptitiously referencing their worship of Yeshua the Palestinian Carpenter, with the x in the tail representing Chi and the bubble of the fish's body representing Rho, and the fish in general referring to the fisherman metaphor in the Gospels.

Overall, my personal favorite is the Flying Spaghetti Monster Car magnet.

11. they're just making sure
they're just making sure that you get the message, so they repeat it.

I have both a Darwin "legged" fish and a Jesus fish on my car. They seem to get along fine, though the combination seems to blow a few fundy's minds...

13. interesting...
I know us liberals hate people who put fish on there cars, but why dont we hate people who put the star and crescent on there cars? Why dont we hate Buddist, Hindu's and Muslims as much as we hate the Christians? Why do we fear them if what they believe in is "make-believe"? Do we just hate religious Americans and are tolerant of religions who kill people because a cartoon of there profit was made? Who do the muslim extremist hate more, the conservatives or the liberals? Dont muslims hate homosexuals? I used to live in Iran, seems to me that hated everything liberal about me...

14. It's a bit of overkill
All of the fish fetish stuff is getting on my nerves. It used to be a nice way for early xtians to identify each other and safe meeting houses, etc. Fine.

But now, people use it as an excuse to wear their relgiosity on their sleeves, a kind of shorthand for

a) I'm more religious than you!

b) I'm religious and you're not!

Either reason is stupid, IMO. So I'm quite tired of the whole business.

I live in the Atlanta, Georgia metro area, and at least one car out of every five has that dumb little fish.
