Religion in the comic books
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 03:20 AM by salvorhardin
I stumbled upon this site a little while ago. All I've got to say, where's the Legion of Freethinkers?
http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/comic_collage.html

We want this page to be as accurate as possible, backed up by objective, published information and not based on conjecture. We do not want this listing to be slanted toward any particular denominational or religious viewpoint. It is intended to accurately report the composition of comic book character religiosity.

Oh. Accuracy and objectivity are good! Certainly wouldn't want to disrespect some imaginary superbeing now would we? ;-)

It also prevents us from getting into arguments over whether Wolverine is a true Christian or not.

5. Thanks for catching the Jewish guys
I copied from the collage page and they didn't list a collage for the Jewish superheros -- or I was too tired to see it. I was wondering where Ben Grimm was.

4. Only two smiles in all that hate and potential violence.
How about some empathy and compassion and maybe there would not be such a need to create Super Heroes to clean up the mess that hate and discontent creates...

6. this gets argued on the Comic Book Resources boards from time to time
Usually debating about Batman's faith and it's function as the possible roots for his neuroses, although there's the occasional "how badass would it be if Nightcrawler were your parish priest" type thread.

Some of the coolest Daredevil stories are about his Catholicism.

8. I think it'd be cool though
If there were superheros who were not only openly atheistic but celebrated their disbelief in the comics. I can see where during the 40s and 50s such might have been seen as an endorsement of Communism, given the hysteria of that time, but the time might be right for it now. I'm not quite sure what superpower would befit a freethinker but the idea does please me.

Of course, there may be an atheist superhero already. I've been out of touch with comic books and graphic novels for a long time.

9. He's a little light on the superpowers
but Mr Natural has long been one of my heroes, and the jaded little rascal doesn't believe in anything -- if you're selling, he ain't buying.

11. Mr. Terrific from DC's Justice Society is a very open atheist
Very cool character. Like Batman in that he's the zenith of human will and achievement (doctor, master of all kinds of martial arts, inventor), only without the grim, tortured bast that Batman has.

18. You clearly have no idea how the brain of a comics nerd operates
This is in utmost serious. In it's defense, however, there have been some good stories dealing with some of the characters' religions (Some of Miller's and Smith's runs come to mind, and the most recent author, who's name I blank on), and some characters are given some fun depth by theirs (Nightcrawler, who looks like a blue demon, is a devout Catholic. Imagine trying to go to mass).
