Can someone recommend a book on Jesus for kids?
That's more from OUR (lefty liberal) point of view? Maybe something from the UCC or Quakers?

4. A very good children's Bible
I have really enjoyed using the "Read with Me Bible: An NIrV Story Bible for Children" published by ZonderKids. It has easy-to-read stories and great illustrations, and covers all the important Old and New Testament stories. It's not smarmy and sugar-coated the way a lot of kids' Bibles are. The only store I've seen it in is WalMart, unfortunately. I'm sure you could also order it online, though.

5. My picks - mainline, progressive, and peace-oriented

Funny you should ask - I used to make these suggestions for a living, so bear with me..!

Bibles, from Amazon -
My favorite children's Bible:
The Family Story Bible by Ralph Milton, Margaret Kyle

and

The Children's Bible in 365 Stories by Mary Batchelor (elementary age)

Also try Faith & Life Press, a Mennonite publisher (some Amish influence in some books, but definitely peace-oriented):

This one sounds creative - "Storytime Jamboree":
In the spirit of his earlier books, The Great Shalom and Shalom at Last, Peter J. Dyck has animals tell stories of their past. They are really Bible stories with animal characters, told with a fresh and light touch. Here readers will find the adventures of renamed figures such as Isaac, Rebekah and her twin sons, Nehemiah, the Good Samaritan--Bible-based tales that develop themes of fairness, peace, and living out faith day and night. They supply values for maturing, drawn from the Scriptures as seen by Dyck, a wise church statesman with broad experience. For ages 6-to-10.

and one called "Following Jesus':
Twenty true stories about people who followed Jesus' way when going the other way would have been much easier. With God's help, the main characters of these stories return good for evil, risk their lives to help others, or become peacemakers when conflict erupts. Written by Mary Clemens Meyer for ages 4-10 and up.

BTW, "Growing Together" is an excellent book about being a spiritual parent:

And a link for some good parenting resources:

8. it may be too much for small children
But teenagers could understand it;
It is one of my favorite called Jesus The son of Man by Khalil Galbraith. (hope I got his name spelled right)
It is a beautifully written book dealing with the people that knew Jesus and what they thought about him. Adults would love it too.

9. My favorite translation...
...is The Message, which is actually considered a "Paraphrase"; it's gripping reading and seems to be fairly accurate.

I'd recommend it for preteens and up and you can download it for free at

http://www.e-sword.net/

Now if anyone has any suggestions on getting my damaged twelve year old to actually READ it instead of dismissing Christianity as a hate crime....
