....

5. The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem
Bible passage: Micah 5:2
Written: sometime between 750-686 BC
Fulfilled: 5 BC
In Micah 5:2, there is a prophecy that many Christians point to as evidence that Jesus is the Messiah. In this Bible passage, Micah said that a great ruler would be born in Bethlehem, a small town in southern Israel. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, as recorded in Matthew 2:1, about 2000 years ago. Aside from being the spiritual leader of Christians around the world, Christians believe that Jesus will return in the future to rule over an everlasting kingdom.

There is disagreement regarding the translation of Micah 5:2. Some people say that the reference to "Bethlehem" is simply a reference to the bloodline of King David. Other people say that it is a reference to the town of Bethlehem. However, as explained in the book of Matthew, Jesus meets both criteria - He is a descendant of King David and He was born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2
"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

1. Since becoming a Catholic, I've learned a lot about OT prophecies

that foreshadow Jesus. I never heard about "salvation history" or Mary as the "second Eve," Jesus as the "second Adam" when I was a Protestant so I'm curious to know if those terms/concepts are familiar to you? The idea is that Mary, by agreeing to bear the Son of God, makes up for Eve's sin, and of course Jesus, by agreeing to accept the guilt for mankind, makes up for Adam's sin. There's a lot more to it, of course.

2. Yeah, but what 'sin' ?
I read and read in the Genesis account and cannot find a transgression.

Why drive two happy people out of a garden?

5. I understand what they are accused of.
I'm asking what they did wrong.

6. Oh, they disobeyed a specific command of God. He said,

"Eat anything you like, except the fruit of this one tree" and they eventually, at the prodding of the serpent, acted like kids told "Don't put beans up your nose" and did just that.

7. Seems odd that the Creator would create --
-- intelligent beings and then punish them for the curiosity which drives and defines that intelligence.

Hardly seems like an offense at all to me.

10. You'll have to take that up with God yourself! I get your point

but I also get the point that they disobeyed.

12. Call me pre-Christian, but I just don't see the justice in --
-- convicting unless a transgression can be demonstrated.

I hereby exonerate Adam and Eve and anyone else smeared with the concept of "original sin" until hard evidence proves guilt.

You're all free to go. The charges were bogus, slapped on innocent people by a guilt-fueled control freak in the Sky.

8. It always seemed odd to me...
that churches, preachers, and religious people were bound and determined to teach me knowledge of good and evil, but the greatest sin of all time that set the whole evil/sin thing in motion was eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Huh?? Eve ate exactly the same thing that they force-fed me all my life.

11. Eve (tricked by the serpent/ Satan) set it all in motion

for all this knowledge to develop. We coulda been fat, dumb, and happy, and nekkid in Eden, if Eve hadn't been so curious. Maybe that would have been boring, though. After all, Eve had curiosity so presumably everyone would have curiosity. . .

3. Have you ever read Psalm 22?
Some people believe Jesus had a moment of doubt on the cross when he asked why God had forsaken him, but someone once explained to me that he was praying the beginning of Psalm 22. That Psalm seems to me to a prophecy of the crucifixion;

God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, and am not silent.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the praise of Israel.
In you our fathers put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
They cried to you and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by men and despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads:
"He trusts in the LORD ;
let the LORD rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him."

Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you
even at my mother's breast.
From birth I was cast upon you;
from my mother's womb you have been my God.
Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Roaring lions tearing their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted away within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.
Dogs have surrounded me;
a band of evil men has encircled me,
they have pierced my hands and my feet.

I can count all my bones;
people stare and gloat over me.
They divide my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing.
But you, O LORD , be not far off;
O my Strength, come quickly to help me.
Deliver my life from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the congregation I will praise you.
You who fear the LORD , praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not despised or disdained
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.
The poor will eat and be satisfied;
they who seek the LORD will praise him-
may your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the LORD ,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the LORD
and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
al who go down to the dust will kneel before him-
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness
to a people yet unborn-
for he has done it.

14. Jesus was allegedly familiar with the Old Testament.
That doesn't mean the Old Testament contains literal prophecy.

You suggest that it does because you want it to.

9. Isaiah 42 anyone?
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%2042;&version=31;

1 "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope."
