God ain't an American.
I was walking on the beach and for some reason, I remembered a song titled "God is an American." During the late '60s, a creature named Lester Maddox was Governor of Georgia. He did it by handing out axe handles to white people to beat up on black people.

Some years later, there was an off-broadway musical named "Red, White and Maddox." The Maddox character spent most of the show talking to "God," even though the audience never heard any audible response.

Maddox has a mission to wipe out everyone who doesn't believe as he does and at the end, no one is left and he says, "Gawd, I got 'em all for you. Gawd? Gawd?" He's all alone and the stage goes dark.

My big fear is that there are too many people like Lester Maddox in positions of power. And as though that weren't bad enough, too many who think that way willing to follow those in power.

3. My dad and I were discussing this last night.
He's afraid that bush will feel like the only way he can "redeem" himself is to push the button.

I wish I could have come up with a valid argument against this possibility.

He is as insane as Saddam, the only difference being that bush has been restrained by his handlers.

I have no doubt he's convinced himself god is on his side.

4. I'm afraid of Americans.
I don't think Bush will ever get to the point where he feels he needs to "redeem" himself - he's forever lost in his own fantasy land where he gets to dress up and act like people who have things like "values" and "thoughts" and "a beating heart".

5. Ah, but he's very concerned about his legacy.
If he thinks he will go down in history as a pathetic loser, he's apt to do something to prove what a he-man he is.

All that macho cowboy bullshit and faux Texas swagger speaks volumes about his mental state.

6. I still contend
That he's entirely too far gone to even realize what a fuck-up he actually is. He's bought his own line of bullshit hook, line and sinker.

7. I'm with varkam on this
I think he's totally deluded -- and that makes him even more dangerous. Nothing has consequences for him. He feels he can do no wrong.

Oh, wait I just dropped the hair dryer in the tub, what a shock! I am ok now, Really. ;)

You are quite right, I have the same fear. Maddox would never survive in todays politics, an illiterate intolerant oaf. A definition of conservatism? Conservatives have regrouped, forget the frontal attack, go for the flank. Ally with the religious right, justify intolerance based on religion. Screw the poor, the minority, the homosexual, screw anyone who is not rich and white. Welcome to America, land of the rich and home of the enslaved.

I personally don't believe in god, god is an invention of humankind, made in our image. That being the case, if god is an American, he is probably a rich white intolerant republican. Or so sayeth Chimp, Robertson, Falwell, Dobson, etc etc.

On edit, wish I could learn the English language.

10. You dropped your hair dryer in the tub and survived?? Pat Robertson must
have been praying for you. I can see him now, camera close in on on his face, eyes super-glued shut, sincerity oozing from his every pour, saying, "I see a person in North America in trouble near a body of water. It's either a man or a woman with a name that starts with a vowel or a consonant. God, ask everyone to pray for this poor soul and send me a check to help out."

As a devout agnostic, I can't help but shake my head in disgust at this man who is either running one of the most successful scams of all time, or is totally, bugshit, insane (yet still running a successful scam).

And what disgusts me even more is the way in which the Republicans have picked up this con game and have successfully run it on so many deluded people for so many years.

Then again, this is nothing new. It probably started back when some caveman sold a pal a balsa wood club and guaranteed it for life.
