Why does James Dobson hate public education and preschool?
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 10:54 PM by A HERETIC I AM
Answer:

Cause they are taught things that make them ask questions. Questions he and others like him cant have them asking. After all, an educated populace is the enemy of the church.

<Snip>In his radio broadcast of April 21, 2006, Dobson urged California parents to "rise up" against any curriculum that would teach tolerance of all people, regardless of their ideology or sexual orientation, or that would include any mention of positive contributions to American society by gay, lesbian, or transsexual citizens.

"If the parents of children in California put up with that, then they're farther gone than I think they are," said Dobson.

On the other hand, if Americans put up with Dobson's theocratic vision of an America without a public education system, then our kids and our country will be farther gone from the dream of a country founded on freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and a recognition that all people, regardless of their background, culture, creed, or sexual orientation, stand equal before the law.<snip>

yeah...wrap it in your hatred for gays but it has more to do with a secular education in general than anything else.

BTW, the free, secular public education system in this country gave rise to one of the most spectacular cultural phenomenon of the modern age. The American middle class. Notice how the eroding of that system has had interesting effects on said middle class over the last 2 decades.

PECAN Pie

Minced Tarts.

Peter Percivals pet pig Porky ate so many pies do you know what he did?

He popped.

I wish Dobson would pop.

On national TV
in Technicolor
In slo-mo
With a close up of the belly portion popping.

4. Excellent Post
The Republicans have tried to savage public education in an order to dumb down kids and create an elitist class.

As far as Dobson goes, I refuse to give credence to a nut who brags about beating a dog into submission.

5. I've read his columns on child rearing
It's amazing what you come up with if you assume that the parent-child relationship is an adversarial one. Dobson is always worried that the 2 year olds are out to dominate him. (and I think he thinks they have the winning edge. Heavens knows, they're a lot cuter!)

6. Dobson is a Crypto-Nazi Propagandist
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 11:20 PM by rwenos
I read his book on spanking when my kid was small. Some of it I agreed with . . . based on common sense if nothing else.

But Dobson's childrearing books carry a strong subtext of victimology. "The public schools have lost control." "They've taken control of your children." "They'll come to arrest you if you spank your child." "It's all because of the libruhls in the schools, and their Commonist college teachers."

Nazi propaganda -- separate the Chosen from the Rabble.

8. If all schools are private, only people with $ will be able to afford to
Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 12:15 AM by BrklynLiberal
get an education, AND what is taught can be more tightly controlled by those who own the schools.

Their goal is to have two classes. The rich/educated who control and take advantage of the poor/uneducated.

10. I am of the opinion that
all of these people who have a problem with what their kids are taught as far as "religious" issues go SHOULD take their kids out of school and put them into a school where what they consider "values" are taught. I feel this way because I look at how many millions of dollars these preachers and "religious" icons bring in every year. I say if they have such a problem with what the public school teaches, that instead of trying to force the public to conform to THEM, they should take their millions of dollars and open up their own damn schools and then they can decide what gets taught to their children. But no, see, it's all about control and greed with these people. They sit there complaining when they have millions of dollars to actually DO something about it, but refuse. They want to rake in the money to pay for their expensive homes and jets. They want to keep the money in their own pockets, and try and force the public to conform to THEM. I'm sorry, but if I had millions of dollars and I truly had a problem with my kids learning about gay tolerance or whatever in public schools, then I would take my kid out and put them into a religious school where tolerance is frowned upon. I wouldn't try and force society to conform to my viewpoint. It boils me to think these damn "religious leaders" have all this money and still sit there acting helpless with the "woe is me" attitude, as if there is nothing else they can do but try to change everyone else.

11. Some people need good public school
because not everyone can afford to go to private school. I go to a (religious) private school (thats SUPER expensive) but the only reason I go there is because it's 10 x better than the public schools in my area and all the other private schools arent nearly as good and were white-flight schools. People need more options, especially in Mississippi, when the only options are blow your bank account on the best private school in the state, go to a white flight academy (mostly white people), or just go through the public school system. Although the schools in the suburbs of Jackson and on the coast (and Tupelo I think?) are really good public schools. So if you want to go to public schools, move to those districts, but I always will hope that the Jackson public schools will get better.

12. Dobson REALLY hates California.
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 04:33 AM by onager
The state tried to make him pay his fair share of taxes. And he had other, Good Xian Reasons for hating the place, too...

Gil told of a day when Dobson complained that his Southern California neighorhood drycleaners was filled with too many people who were "not American enough".

That observation, along with California's efforts to tax religious non-profits, lead Dobson to seek a new home for his empire.

http://www.evolvefish.com/fish/product136.html

And the cheap bastid fleeced California taxpayers even after he moved to Colorado...

The median annual household income in Pomona (CA) was $31,000 when Focus was located there. Pomona's population was 75 percent minorities. So minority families trying to survive in the Los Angeles area on $31,000 a year were given no choice but to pitch in a little extra so millionaire businessman Dobson, who lived twenty miles away in an upper-class white neighborhood, didn't have to pay any property taxes.

Focus has not been able to sell its Pomona headquarters building since leaving town for Colorado in 1991. So that piece of property is still off the tax rolls to this day, and those neighbors are still paying for the street light in front of the vacant complex at 801 Corporate Center Drive.

Oh, and the Great Child Expert was "spoiled rotten" during his own childhood...
