Rejecting the Da Vinci Code

Gearing Up to Protest
The Da Vinci Code Movie
The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) and its America Needs Fatima campaign are gearing up to protest against the blasphemous movie The Da Vinci Code when it is released nationwide on May 19, 2006..

The organization hopes to recruit tens of thousands of its activists to protest in front of theaters. In addition, the American TFP website has just posted a Protest Central which contains resources and ways to get involved.

A special "how-to" protest manual was sent to 27,000 America Needs Fatima members. Also available online, the manual contains a step-by-step outline on how to set up and carry out peaceful and prayerful protests in front of theaters. Thousands of America Needs Fatima members are getting ready to protest the movie by reading and studying the manual.

"The manual really is helping me get ready for the protests we're going to do in St. Louis," said Mark Serafino, local protest organizer in St. Louis. "I know we'll make a great effect."

Volunteers Needed
As the film's May 19 release approaches, America Needs Fatima is also recruiting dozens of volunteers to work at the America Needs Fatima National Anti-Blasphemy Protest Center in Rossville, Kan. Volunteers can spend a week or two at the Center, helping to call and recruit new protest organizers.

Others will keep in touch with people who are already protest organizers, university students and others. They will maintain a round-the-clock receptionist service that offers help, support and advice to protest organizers in all 50 states.

1. I thought the boycott was only by the Catholic church, but

I see the "boycotts" are pretty far reaching for this.

12. These people are Catholic too
The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) was born of a group of Catholic Americans concerned about the multiple crises shaking every aspect of American life. Founded in 1973, the American TFP was formed to resist, in the realm of ideas, the liberal ... (etc.)

They're just self-proclaimed illiberal Catholics.

10. Totally agree. The more of a dust-up there is over a film or book or
play, the more likely people are to line up and shell out cash to see for themselves what all the fuss is about.

I think there's a good chance this film is going to be a box office smash.

They are afraid it might lead some to question what the church says from now on.

20. As a Christian
I'm just happy to have some sort of evidence out there that implies Christ existed. These folks need to get real.

6. Geeze, why do people get so damn riled up over these non-issues?
For God's sake it's just a novel. But I guess I should expect this from a group that runs a national anti-blasphemy center. :eyes:

15. You have to remember.
These are issues to some people.

I've noticed a certain tendency on DU to agonize over why the "sheeple" are so "stupid" as to ignore their own best interests as to vote for Republicans because of such issues asa choice and gay marriage. The answer is quite simple, in their own estimation, the only one that counts, their positions are in their own best interests. Not everyone sees issues based solely on the economics. IN fact, liberals and progressives don't, either, or they would be willing to abandon the issues.

So that leaves only one choice: educate, educate, educate. But to dismiss the voters as "stupid", or even "evil" not only misses the point, but is self-defeating. "Evil" and "stupid" votes count as much in a democracy as do "Intelligent" and "good" votes. And in a democracy, that's as it should be.

21. This is a good point
and I've been guilty (about five minutes ago) of calling fundamentalists stupid, because really I've only known one really smart one. But I think that is probably bigoted of me.

But they do appear to wear blinders that don't allow them to see that they can't remain on top forever, and someday if they mix up church and state, they might be praying to Mecca five times a day as required by law. What's sauce for the goose is also A-1 for the gander.

Catholics urged to snub Da Vinci Code film

April 28, 2006, 21:30

The Vatican stepped up its offensive against The Da Vinci Code today when a top official close to Pope Benedict blasted the book as full of anti-Christian lies and urged Catholics to boycott the film. The latest broadside came from Archbishop Angelo Amato, the number two official in the Vatican doctrinal office, which was headed by Pope Benedict until his election last year.

Amato, addressing a Catholic conference in Rome, called the book "stridently anti-Christian, full of calumnies, offences and historical and theological errors regarding Jesus, the gospels and the Church." He added: "I hope that you all will boycott the film"...

9. Sorry, but that's just sad, IMO. The DaVinci Code is FICTION.
It's a movie. A Ron Howard movie starring Tom Hanks. Unbelievable.

The Church should forget nonsense like this and take care of poor people.

11. I suggest,
instead of protesting a work of fiction brought to the screen, maybe they should tell the members to read their Bible.

13. I've got a feeling
that what they're protesting isn't gonna be what they think they're protesting. I mean, this isn't Scorsese or Gilliam we're talking about here. It's Ron Howard, that most pedestrian of directors, and stars Tom Hanks, our most Everyman of actors. There was a NY Times article a while back that said studio execs solicited advice from religious groups on how to make the movie non-offensive. This thing could wind up being a ball of noncommital mush, with little of the sacrilege the fundies hope for, or the fidelity the fans expect.
