The gay community needs to set up their own church |
|
This is a not a blueprint, but an outline. It is meant to be taken seriously.
Scenario: a gay couple in San Francisco have a vision. They are visited by the angel Ramone, who advises them that a lost book of the Bible is buried on top of Mt Tamalpais, graven on stone tablets. They proclaim their revelation. Noone is allowed to see the tablets, but a translation is provided wherein it is revealed that Jesus had a gay brother named Norman, who He loved greatly and who He embraced in his ministry. St. Paul loathed Norman and denounced him after the death of the Master, extirpating all records of his existence until now. God has sent the angel Ramone to bring Norman and the rest of the gay community back into his embrace.
As the word spreads throughout the gay community, congregations of Normanists spring up across the country. A liturgy is developed. A panoply of gay saints emerge. The persecuted become holy martyrs to the Faith. Protection is sought under the Constitutional guarantee of Freedom of Worship. Normanists achieve equal standing with Catholics,Presbyterians, Baptists, Mormons, Scientologists and followers of Reverend Moon. Jerry Falwell suffeers a massive coronary and the Rev. Dobson's head explodes.

1. Well, there is a more conventional gay denomination. |

http://www.mccchurch.org/the Metropolitan Community Church. But if you could make Dobson's head explode, I would consider it a miracle of God.

2. It's 100 feet away from me! |

I'm in liberal/gay Capitol Hill (denver) and the Church is across the street. Every denomination (including straight people) worship together. I volunteer there at the food bank. I love them all. We had a party to celebrate the Mass. decision and had a 'wedding' for all whom wanted to!

3. In Dallas, there's also Cathedral of Hope... |
|
...but pastor Mike Piazza resigned his post just over a week ago amid allegations of financial mismanagement and other controversies. He played a huge part in breaking Cathedral of Hope away from MCC, which resulted in defections from CoH and the establishment of smaller MCC satellites around Dallas.

4. My church - Disciples of Christ - is an open and affirming church |
|
similar to UU Welcoming Congregations. Only requirement for membership in my church is a belief in Jesus - even then what that entails is open to individual interpretation.

5. That misses the point of my argument for a Gay Church |
|
A Gay Church would not merely welcome gays. Norman, the brother of Christ, participates in His divinity. As Whitman says, "I contain multitudes." God does not merely welcome gays, He is gay. This is the message of the lost book of the Bible, the book of Norman. God is gay and straight, male and female. He contains all principles. To paraphrase the spiritual, He's so high you can't go over Him; so low you can't go under Him. His embrace is broad. He does not differentiate or take sides. He is a truely Universal Being.

6. Didn't say God did take sides |
|
I was just saying there are churches out there that do not teach that homosexuality is a sin, who welcome gays just the same as they welcome straight people. Mine is such a church. I was simply informing those who care that there are churches who welcome all people regardless of sexual orientation.
