Poll question: Christian-Lion fights in Old Rome. |
|
Many would consider throwing human beings into arenas or pits to hungry lions to be categorically abominable.
History notes that the power elite and bored crowds in ancient Rome, for instance, appeared to condone them.
POLL QUESTION:
Where do you stand on Christian-lion fights?

2. Good point. The PETA people are already at my doorstep with |

torches and pitchforks. It's getting ugly.

3. Same place I do on gays, blacks, jews, etc being thrown to lions |
|
Wrong is wrong always. Unless wrong is only relative based on who is in power and making the rules of the day and no moral absolutism exists.
A belief has little or no power if it cannot be acted upon - and able to grow and infect others with similar ideals. Beliefs want to live, to grow, much like the people holding them.
That is why, to me, we come on here and argue our beliefs - to either make them grow or to die and be replaced by a different belief.
Did I get sidetracked again?? :)

5. Forget what you've seen in over-the-top old movies |
|
It really happened to real people and it's not really something to joke about. I don't want to make you feel bad for the posting, but sometimes we get too blase about evil just because it's so far distant.

6. I agree we should not joke about it... |
|
nor should we forget the Christians were much more humane in burning and other slower forms of death for those they disagreed with.

7. I think it's safe to say |
|
that the people who went into the arena to face the lions were not the same individuals responsible for burning people at the stake.
Or are you excusing the Romans for torturing Christians of one era because Christians of another era tortured Christians and others? Evil is evil.

11. Finder did not appear to me to be advocating murder. |
|
Finder also appeared not to be advocating evil.
Lighten up a bit and enjoy the ride. Your objection is way off the spirit of the original post.

10. Quite so. Women thought to be witches were burned alive by |
|
"devout" Christians.
The post involved a strongly-felt and long-held bias against Ralph Reed.
That's the hinge.

9. Not an accurate read. You can't assume that a slam on Ralph Reed's |
|
smug assholian fundamentalism and corrupt manipulations on behalf of the GOP constitutes insensitivity to mindless violence.
No sale.

Hope you're doin' great.
Your sense of humor is as sharp as ever, and it's always terrific.
Wait! Did I say HUMOR?
Whoops.
There seems to be a question of whether there can BE humor regarding religious themes.
Ha-ha, says I. I say there can be.
Did you ever read/see THE NAME OF THE ROSE? Two monks, both scholars, argue passionately over whether Christ laughed. It's a humdinger of a debate, too.
Thanks for your reply & a happy summertime to ya.
