Answering the Call--DLC asks Democrats to talk about Religion in America
Well, I'm a religion scholar and a blogger looking to synthesize a range of opinions among Democrats. Please come and post your Religion in America experience and opinions about how we should proceed. Thanks.

Please post in comments or send an email to the address given in post.

1. I'm not religious,
but I'm kicking this because it deserves more attention.

I hope you get some replies.

2. I'll talk about religion
It scares the shit out of me. I never have learned how to tell which religions to be afraid of, so I fear them all. My experience with religion in America is that it is a dangerous influence that threatens to destroy our democracy. If a genie granted me one wish it would be that all religion would disappear.

Now, aren't you glad you asked?

3. Even though I agree with you 100%,
I don't think that's quite what he had in mind.

4. Perhaps we could get an explanation
of what he really wanted. I provided an opinion and a view from my experience. I thought that was what he wanted. Maybe he just wanted affirmation and reinforcement of some preconceived notion. Lets see how the OP responds.

Out where? (I live in Waco, Texas. It is always out there)

7. Out in the I/P forum.
I mean, GD.

It's like living in Texas squared.

8. I avoid that forum because I disagree with everyone there
And they don't want to hear my opinion and I don't want to hear theirs. The world is a better place because I decide to stay out of that shit.

9. You mean GD?
Or the I/P forum?

Because unfortunately, it's become like kudzu and has taken over all of the main forums.

10. I avoid all discussion of the I/P issue
I don't see any way for either side to be worthy of my attention. I don't like any of them and nobody cares what I like!

I just don't get it.

I'm an atheist, who's side am I supposed to be on, anyway?

12. You are supposed to be on the side of the children
who are dieing, but they are secondary to the politics. Oops, I discussed the taboo topic.

Do they want you to distinguish between dead Palestinian children and dead Jewish children? What is the point.

In America tonight 13 million children went to bed with inadequate nutrition. It makes me wish that there was a god and that he judged us instantly on how we treat children. A little Instant Karma would be quite refreshing. And it would certainly end the debate on the I/P issue.

14. But which children does God like better?
Isn't that what it comes down to?

God said this, God said that...shut the fuck up, God.

Sorry, believers, I have to vent or I'll start to hemorrhage internally.

Either that or I'll go out and run over some red state freepers; and my dad already told me he's not bailing me out anymore.

24. The standard reply is that religion isn't responsible.
People would find other reasons to hate each other.

Right.

I can't see how anyone can look at what's going on right now and expect me to believe that these people would be slaughtering each other over a dried up and useless piece of land for any other reason.

25. And that is why I try to avoid the issue
To me, they are all making excuses. I really don't care why they kill children. Race, real estate, religion, sex, money, power, who cares? I just want them to STOP! One excuse is as good as the next. And I don't want to hear any of them. And anyone who thinks their excuse is better is automatically WRONG!

People who think that killing children is justifiable under the circumstances are, in my opinion, IN-fuckin-SANE! Hopelessly, pathologically, terminally insane.

But hey, you know what they say, atheists have no morals.

"You don't see BLAMMO!!! KABOOM!!!! coming out of atheist quarters."

I'm listening to Vivaldi at low volume, eating my organic fruit and I will make sure to feed the strays and the birds outside before I turn in.

Not much BLAMMO, I'm afraid.

I was waiting for the OP to check in and elaborate on the request, but I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow. There may even be some interesting responses to the "god is an atheist" post. I'll bet Southpawkicker has something pointless to say about it.

Thanks for your time and thought.

13. Remember, we're all actually on the side of lasting peace.
There are just some people who think that the way to get that peace is by shooting the other side and by saying how different they are to the people on the other side who think that the way to get peace is by shooting the other side.

Because, they are obviously different. I mean, see that pea in that pod next to the other one? It has a dimple. Well so does the other one, but that's not the point. They're as different as those peas. Perhaps even differenter. :)

All that, because of so-called peaceful religion.

Be as broad or specific as you want. The next phase will be narrower based on ideas given here. I'm hoping this research leads me to better focus my writing on the subject to areas that may be getting ignored.
