2. Or maybe it's hell, depending on your perspective. |
|
;-)
Seriously though, if you believe there's no God or higher being, then the concept of heaven is irrelevant.

heaven is what would make you most happiest?
If staying right here on earth with your life, friends, family just the way they are does that for you, then you're in heaven.

5. Yeah, and heaven/happiness here on earth must come from within - |
|
regardless of one's circumstances. So I guess you have a point. Although I'm not sure I'd use the word heaven (semantics, I know).

I've had moments of hell in my life. The hope that those moments would pass has given me glimpses of heaven (i.e. heaven was simply the possibility of returning to life as normal).
Of course, as you imply, the religious idea of heaven is more permanent than fleeting emotions here on earth.

7. Those moments of hell - |
|
would we be able to appreciate the moments of heaven without them? Probably not.

8. The concept of heaven can be relevant regardless of belief. |
|
Now and then I realize that I am perfectly happy, doing exactly what I want, feeling loved and fulfilled, and having people I love around me. Heaven is the word I use for those times, and having a word for it makes me recognise it more often, and recognising my own happiness doubles it. And I am thankful for it.
I wonder if the happiness we are capable of experiencing is directly correlated with the misery we may have gone through in the past. Or is it genetic, or learned?
I once met an African who was envied by all around for his constant happiness. His joyful grin would light up the whole room. So when I was alone with him I asked him what had happened in his past. He asked what i meant, so I explained that no-one gets a smile like that without experiencing hell first. His story of what happened in the African country he was raised in, of a bad government, his family being forced off their land, and then watching them raped and killed, terrified they would catch him .... he was only a child then ... was one I'd never forget. And that was only the start of it.
Heaven and hell both exist in this world. But if we stopped relying on god to intervene, and each took it upon ourselves to do what we believe a loving god would do if he/she stood in our shoes, then heaven would be a more common state for everyone.

Exactly.
And all it would take would be for us humans to treat each other better.
Thank you.

10. If you don't buy into the god story |
|
Why do you buy into the heaven story? That doesn't make sense to me.

11. I'm in heaven right now, in a manner of speaking. |
|
Yesterday was hell, the old devil next door made trouble all day. His wife must be a saint to put up with him. But my son was an angel making me a pot of tea when I needed it.
One word can have many meanings, and not all uses of the words heaven, hell, god, angel or saint have a religious or spiritual context.
