Woman Dedicates Her Virginity to Jesus
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nat-gen/2006/oct/07/100704885.html

EAST AURORA, N.Y. (AP) - She stood at the altar in a white gown and veil, but she was there for no earthly man. Lori Rose Cannizzaro was dedicating her virginity to Jesus.

Saturday's rare Catholic ceremony, one her own pastor didn't know existed, turned the 42-year-old into a "consecrated virgin." Fewer than 200 women in the United States and 2,000 worldwide have declared their perpetual virginity this way, according to U.S. Association of Consecrated Virgins.

"There are people who think I'm nuts," Cannizzaro said.

<snip>

The rite is available only to virgins, who agree to abstain from sex so they can dedicate their lives to Jesus Christ in what the association describes as a mystical marriage and a profound spiritual blessing. Each woman wears a band on her left ring finger as a symbol, much like a wedding band.

responsibilities to that community. This ceremony (it seems to me - the article is a bit thin on the details) is for her alone. I actually think this is kind of neat - amazing the things you find in the RC church if you dig a bit...

20. Nuns pledge vows of poverty, chastity and obedience
This woman only pledged the vow of chastity.

Think of this as being kind of like a nun--you're still a virgin, you're still faithful to Jesus, but you can get a job besides being a teacher or a nurse.

However, the wedding gown is a little over the top.

Edited on Sat Oct-07-06 04:18 PM by Clark2008
As a Catholic, this really didn't strike me as odd as it did some DUers, but I did wonder why she just didn't become a nun. I mean, honestly, if you're going to consecrate yourself, why not do some good deeds for others and join the service, officially.

On Edit: I see that she already does do good works in the name of the Church - so it's even MORE baffling that she shouldn't just join an order.

9. this from the Archdioscese of washington

Consecrated Virgins and Hermits

The consecrated life forms of virgins and hermits are distinct from one another as well as from other forms of consecrated life. Each involves an individual commitment to the diocesan bishop and accountability to him for following a specific plan of life. Neither involves life in community.

Consecration to a life of virginity for women living in the world is among the oldest types of consecration in the church. Today, in the Rite revised in 1970, a virgin may be consecrated to God by the diocesan bishop and dedicated to the service of the Church. It is a permanent commitment that reflects a mystical betrothal to Christ. Consecrated virgins pray the Liturgy of the Hours, receive the sacraments regularly, and are faithful to private prayer. They keep the bishop and the needs of the diocese as the focus of prayer.

The fundamental commitment of a hermit entails separation, solitude, silence, prayer, and penance. Its essential elements are public profession of the evangelical counsels – obedience, poverty, and consecrated celibacy through the mediation of the diocesan bishop and a plan of life for which they are accountable to the diocesan bishop. The eremetical life is devoted to the praise of God and the salvation of the world.

19. It was probably a great way to avoid unwanted marriages in the Middle Ages
When a woman was the property of her father and marriage was the transfer of those property rights to a husband chosen by her father (usually some geezer with cash to marry a 13 year old), the only way to legitmately avoid marriage was either becoming a nun (or if one's family needed you for elder care and such) to dedicate your virginity to God. Makes perfect sense if the only other options are marriage to a gnarly old man you don't love or suicide. Some of the early Catholic female martyrs were women who didn't want to marry.

They were both Philipina and starting talking, (Philipinos always seem to pick out others in the crowd and talk about philipino stuff :) )

During the conversation my wife asks, 'You have a boyfriend?'

She responded with "Jesus is my boyfriend".

52. Well, she couldn't have felt compelled to do this
out of a feeling of need to validate her situation, because society isn't totally about pairing off in a particular way, and no one ever looks askance at those who don't manage to do it.

I'm sure she's just a nutcase or an unattractive loser, and there's nothing wrong with the world around her.

Do I need the dripping sarcasm icon here?

Those of you who are criticizing and making fun of this woman's choice, try asking yourselves what's wrong with not being part of something resembling a couple. Is it really that great for most people? Is it so much fun and the chances of being happy and fulfilled so high that one has to be nuts not to try it? Is there more than about a 10-percent chance that sex with any given person will be good? And why, in the 21st century, is it still so fucking important?

Why is it better to have been laid badly than never to have been laid at all?
