How well do you know the Bible? |

Here is a quiz you may find interesting. It was posted in the AA forum as well. http://ffrf.org/quiz/bquiz.php

1. Cant say I can quote anything from it cause.. |
|
it is not relevant any more.
it is archaic history, old tales, and messages to scare people into acceptance.
Oh yea, and the end of the world is coming soon too!

2. 13 years after graduating seminary and I get a 30 |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 01:38 PM by Ezlivin
After I left the church and the faith behind, I never, ever picked up another bible. Since it had been a colossal waste of my life to that point I didn't see any need to ever refer to that "holy" book ever again.
Still, it's amazing what crap still sticks to the inside of my brain.
And it's amazing that I ever gave any of it serious thought. Wow.
Edit: Chronological math correction

3. After all these years, I scored 49 |
|
although at this late date, quite a few were wild guesses.
I used to know it quite well. I had to outquote Southern Baptists to stay alive.
Most of 'em had never actually read their babbles, so it wasn't all that hard.

Yep, I were one. Raised, saved and baptized in a small SBC church. I graduated Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1993 (the same year that Russell Dilday, the seminary president, was fired for being too "liberal"; the man who headed up the charge had to leave his church after it came out that he was having sex with 4 or 5 of his staff's wives). I went door-to-door to "witness", having my wife drag my wheelchair up the steps to some homes. In a word, I was intense (insane?).
Now that I'm on the "other" side, I'm astonished that I was capable of being so brainwashed.
It's good to have your mind back, isn't it?

Irish Catholic ("fallen away" is too mild) kid felt compelled to learn great amounts of nonsense from the KJV in self defense.
I'm just astounded that I remembered so much of the hooey.

Those years at Catholic high school seminary served me well. Read the bible twice cover to cover. Once before I went to the seminary, once before my senior year as a promise to my spiritual advisor when we talked about me not continuing on to minor seminary. The second read through was the beginning of my journey to atheism.

I was forced to read the Bible a number of times as a child (and did it a few more times voluntarily), and even took a class in college on how the old testament treated women, which examined the text quite closely, so I thought I knew it better than that. (Those damn foreskins threw me. Must not have been paying attention when I read that part because I was focusing on David loving Jonathan with a love surpassing that of a man for a woman.)
I also managed to read a couple of questions backward (d'oh!), and disagreed with a couple of the correct answers (because I'm a contrarian), but I guess it's time to brush up, because I like to be able to point out the absurd inconsistencies and the blatant misogyny, and to counter outright made-up "scripture" that christers like to spout.

20. Too many trick questions to be meaningful |
|
Such as #43, "Which word is in the Bible?" The one and only correct answer is NONE of them. After all, the Bible is written in Aramaic, Hebrew and Koine Greek. Every last English version is an imperfect and usually prejudiced translation.

Every last English version is an imperfect and usually prejudiced translation.
Yet there are many people willing to run the lives of and even harm others based on those imperfect and prejudiced translations.

30. That was one of the questions |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 12:00 PM by bloom
that I had a sense that I could reason out. I knew that the concept of the trinity was not in there - nor Christmas, obviously - nor rapture, even though a lot of people like to think that it is.
But liberal - now that's a good Biblical word (even if it is a translation).
---Though that idea rather goes against what the quiz was trying to point out. The quiz did do a good job of showing how violent (and outrageous) some of the Bible is -as well as how misogynist.
I got a 24. I guessed a lot.

1,3,9,11,12,15,21,22,23,28,32,34,36,43 all strike me as being at best very dubious, and in most cases clearly deliberate misinterpretations.
People like this get atheists a bad name; there are more than enough good examples of problems with potentially-correct interpretations of the bible without resorting to deliberate obvious misinterpretations or oversimplification to the point of contradicting the actual meaning.

31. While there are some questions |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 12:22 PM by bloom
which seem like they could have multiple answers - like
23. How does the biblical god treat haughty women?
Where I expect that there are other places in the Bible where "haughty women" are treated with different punishments. So that one answer would not cover it (I'm just guessing - I don't have any citations).... but maybe none of the quiz answers are actually in the Bible.
I think for the most part the quiz demonstrates pretty clearly some of the whacked out passages that most Christians either take for granted or ignore or whatever - until the thing in question is put out there - in a different context from what they are used to.
Like question #32
"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26)
I remember thinking about that passage - that if you really think about what it says - it's pretty weird - encouraging people to leave - to hate, even - all of their relatives. And I have a brother who took it seriously for a few years - and left the family. So I don't see it as a meaningless throw off line. I also don't think that it can metaphor-ed or explained away.
It's easy for people to say - that sensible people will only pay attention to the sensible parts and will ignore the ridiculous things. That seemed to be the expectation of Churches when I was growing up. How much better it would be to have a handbook that made sense. That didn't have a lot of crap that people worship as if it is word for word the word of "God".
