Screw MLB...Pablo was robbed!!!
No one is going to convince me that MLB's Final Vote wasn't rigged. It's just way too convenient that NL and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's favorite was chosen over Pablo. If Manuel thought Victorino was an All Star why didn't he pick him to begin with? Unless of course he knew something more was going on behind the scenes.

Another thing, the Mariners Russell Branyan, who has similar numbers to AL starter Mark Teixeira, wasn't included on the AL side of the Final Vote. Had he been, this would have given Seattle and San Francisco the opportunity to form a natural alliance..millions of motivated Mariners fans would have then included the Panda when they voted for Branyan.

One can only conclude that the omission of Branyan was no doubt intentional so as to cost Pablo his rightful place as an All Star.

All this is very suspicious. ..Sandoval had vastly superior numbers to Victorino, Pablo was robbed..

I'm still going to watch the All Star game, after all Cain and Lincecum are there, but I will do so under protest.

22. Sure you're right
it doesn't have THAT kind of impact. First off, Wright only plays half his games there. Second, Sheffield has got 10 HRs with 130 less ABs, Murphy has 5, 100 less ABs, and Beltran 8 having played 20 less games.

No, much more is going on here..

BTW, Safeco has roughly the same dimensions as Citi Field and Ichiro has 6 HRs. Now if you want to say that Wright, now that he's off his "diet":eyes:, packs about the same amount of punch as Ichiro, I'd agree. Of course, Ichiro is far better all around hitter.

38. First off, anyone can cherry pick stats like you did and claim that
your guy is superior. There are several notable categories that you conveniently left out in your comparison, and you didn't say anything about the defensive skills of either player, which should not be overlooked. Shane is an elite center fielder, covering all kinds of ground and daring runners to test his arm.

And now you think it's appropriate to insult Charlie Manuel for not picking your beloved Sandoval when he has only so many spots to fill and a great number of worthy players to choose from. But of course, you're much too selfish and belligerent to let that thought cross your mind.

I'm sure Pablo would be really proud of the way you're handling his defeat. Always classy. :sarcasm:

10. And now the crookedness is all coming out

Phillies fans who voted for Victorino were entered to win a No. 8 signed jersey and baseball. The Tigers offered fans who voted at least 100 times for Inge a sweepstakes incentive that included participation in a ceremonial first-pitch event, two infield box seats, a batting practice jersey and much more.

Inge and Victorino unquestionably helped each other through the Bran-Torino alliance, which was formed mutually by the Tigers and Phillies after the first day of balloting saw their candidates trailing. Their pictures were side-by-side on both teams' Web sites.

12. higher batting avg and 5 more rbi do not mean better
Sandoval is a terrible fielder. Last week he dropped a routine pop up against the redbirds that directly lost the game for the Giants. Victorino is a gold glove CF who has consistently led the league in outfield fielding percentage and assists and has been among league leaders in stolen bases, none of which Sandoval does. Sandoval has had a good half. Victorino has consistently performed over a few years and also was an MVP candidate for the playoffs last year. All-STAR means a "Star". Sandoval is not a star yet. Victorino is, it's that simple. No fix, no rigging. OVERALL, Victorino is a better baseball player. Sandoval is a better power hitter, yes. That's all. Not fielding, not baserunning, or any other facet of the game. There is more to Baseball than the Home run. I guess there's a reason Steroid king Bonds played in San Fran, that's all they want. Winning doesn't matter, effort doesn't matter (which is all good defense is, and Sandoval is not a good fielder at all). Face it, Victorino won like it or not. Be a gracious loser for pete's sake instead a whining crybaby a la Bonds.

15. Stats..
BA

Pablo: .326
Victorino: .308

HR

Pablo: 13
Victorino: 6

RBI

Pablo: 48
Victorino: 40

Slugging %

Pablo: .560
Victorino: .464

About the only thing Victorino leads Pablo in is SBs...I'll give him that.

You can't compare the fielding of a CF to a third baseman. You want to compare Sandoval's fielding percentage to someone, compare it to this year's NL starting third baseman David Wright:

Wright-.946
Pablo-.973

And I'm not interested in last year, the All Star game is supposed to be all about this year. Otherwise, why don't we just bring in a bunch of stars from years past and hold an old timers game?

You also have absolutely no idea about the integrity of this vote, all you can do is speculate much like I'm doing.

43. convenient omissions
Quite convenient how you left out a very important Stat if it's all about this year....runs scored. Victorino has almost TWICE Panda's (61 to 38...not even close!). In on base percentage they are separated by only a few points because Victorino has more walks and less K's and more hits, but you conveniently left them out too. As far as fielding goes, you can't just disregard it as if it's not part of the game, that's just ridiculous. Victorino wins games (including playoffs) with his speed and D. Sandoval loses games with his D (like last week in St Louis). If you want to use stats use ALL OF THEM, not just the ones that favor your argument. The objective truth is that they are about even and the vote reflected that. It's YOUR opinion that the game is about just this year, that's not a rule as far as I know, is it? Again, it's the all-STAR game, not the all-half year game. Victorino IS a star and Sandoval is a player who had a good half of one season, hardly a star yet. Besides, he will probably replace Beltran anyway.

47. Victorino has scored more runs?
That's hardly surprising considering the Phillies play in a bandbox allowing them to be 4th in MLB in scoring runs. The Giants play in a pitching friendly park and have nowhere near the overall offensive punch of the Phillies..therefore I don't see how Victorino leading in runs scored reflects poorly upon the Panda.

Still, Victorino leads in runs scored, walks and stolen bases...Pablo leads in everything else.

And yes the All Star game is about THIS season and I don't consider Victorino to be an established star...he's never hit more than .300 for a season, he's a career .286 hitter and he doesn't hit for power..He walks, steals a few bases and scores runs..wonderful. Apparently your standard of what constitutes a "star" and mine are quite different.

As for Pablo's defense, I already put up up the stats showing Sandoval with a better fielding percentage than that of NL starter David Wright..your statement that the Panda "loses games with his D" is a complete exaggeration..particularly when you use the plural but then can point to only a single questionable example.

14. It's obviously all Lingle's and Rendell's fault
mostly Lingle's since she's an (R), of course. :sarcasm:

http://www.starbulletin.com/news/breaking/50397692.html

Also, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle and Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell agreed to a friendly wager of pineapples and cheese steaks, with the winner being the state that generated the most votes for Victorino.

I would imagine Gov. Rendell will soon be biting into one of Maui's juiciest, seeing as how his state -- even just the Phillies half of it -- is, like, five times bigger than ours. Come to think of it, hetero female DUers might consider the Flyin' Hawaiian himself to be "one of Maui's juiciest"...

The bottom line:

Shane Victorino of Maui today became the first position player from Hawaii to make a Major League All-Star team.

23. Here's the only stat that matters... ATTENDANCE!
The Phillies outdraw the Giants by almost 10,000, so it's likely that the Phillies have more fans willing to vote, and more fans willing to vote hundreds of times (like some Giants fans did). The vote for the final player isn't about average, HR's, OBP or fielding percentage. It's about fan support.

In the end, Manuel will add Sandoval when someone else backs out for injury reasons and they'll both be there (Beltran, someone mentioned below).

28. This is what happened..
Philadelphia and Detroit, being represented by Victorino and Inge, formed an alliance so that each city voted for the other's player as well as their own. Pablo was denied this kind of advantage, a San Francisco, Seattle alliance, when the Mariners' Russell Branyan was omitted from the the AL's final 5, an outrageous act considering Branyan's numbers. Had Branyan been added, an alliance would have been formed, and the Panda would have been the beneficiary of millions of Mariners' fans votes...meaning he would have won easily.

All this of course is assuming that MLB's vote tally would have been accurate.

32. It makes perfect sense..
and check out Branyan's numbers compared to the $180 million Yankee and AL starter at 1st base, Mark Teixeira:

BA

Branyan: .287
Teixeira- .281

HR

Branyan-21
Teixeira-21

RBI

Teixeira-63
Branyan-46

Slugging %

Branyan-.585
Teixeira-.552

Branyan is comparable in every stat but RBIs to the man who is being toasted on the East Coast as the best first baseman in the AL..I know Mariners' fans are mighty upset over the snub, he's been carrying that team offensively.. Are you telling me you don't think he at least belonged in that final 5?

41. Teixeira won the fan vote, he wasn't the best 1B in the AL.
Morneau was tied or better than Teixeira in EVERY category with one exception (Teixeira had 1 more double than Morneau).

The real choice was Branyan or Pena (as they both play 1st base). Overall, Branyan has better numbers (other than Runs, HR's and RBI's, which Pena was better in), but in the fan voting, Pena got twice as many votes.

but more importantly, as was stated, this was all within the rules. Is there any reason as SF player could only align himself with a Seattle player? In what way was Pablo "denied" this kind of advantage? The AL also had Kinsler (Tex), Pena (Tam), Lind (Tor) and Figgins ("LA"). Does SF not work and play well with others outside of Seattle? No CA pride for people to vote for Figgins and Sandoval?

We're talking about baseball fans, not politics, and many baseball fans are not all that politically aware (though obviously, some are). If people in Tampa, Toronto, or Texas think their guy will get votes in SF if they vote for Sandoval, they'll vote for him. Philly and Detroit marketed their partnership well and got the people to participate. Interesting that the LA partnership (by far the biggest market involved) didn't amount to a first or second place vote for either guy.

Victorino's home state of Hawai'i is three hours behind PDT and six behind EDT. So, while all of you mainland types were sleeping, we were all as busy as little beavers (mongooses?) logging on and typing our fingers to the bone for the Flyin' Hawaiian. Hey, it used to work on American Idol (when we had local contestants like Jasmine Trias)! And then you all woke up to find Victorino in the lead.
