6. doesn't look quite as bad now
Wound up +3 for the day, but he'll only be two shots off the lead. That course got tough on everyone as the day wore on ...

12. Current state with just a few holes left in the day:
Matthew Goggin (Aus) leads having finished
Tied with him is the 59 year old Tom Watson
and also Ross Fisher (Eng) - whose wife is at home, overdue with their first baby!

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/sports/golf/19golf.html?hpw

20 players are within 5 shots.

13. Now he leads after 54--Tomorrow is going to be fun!
Watson had a great round. He lost the lead on 15, but then birdied 16 and 17 to take it back.

At 59, the oldest to win a major? I'm sure of it.

17. yep -- currently Julius Boros is the oldest major winner, and he was 48
I hope he can do it. Frankly, after his great round on Thursday I didn't think he'd hang on this long. I thought back to 2003 when he held the opening-round lead in the U.S. Open, then faded.

But I'm glad he's hung on this time, and I'll be pulling for him tomorrow. Man, what a story that would be :)

15. I'm either going to have to stay up all night or go to bed early.
Fuck it, I hate going to bed early.

I was cheering the two birdies when I watched the highlights online earlier. It would be awesome to see him win this bad boy. :)

25. I was trying to pull for Watson but couldn't
After reading Johnny Miller's book from a few years ago I'm very aware of Watson's politics, including this summary:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/golf/article6719773.ece

"Oxman's political leaning is distinctly Democrat. Watson started out in life as a liberal and a Democrat but, by his own admission, has become conservative and Republican as he has got older. The two men often talk about politics as they go about their business.

“I'm a great believer in the truism that, if you are not liberal when you are 19, there is something wrong with your heart, and that if you are not conservative when you are 40, then there is something wrong with your head,” Watson said.
