Time for the Giants to think about cutting ties with Barry Zito?
By 'Duk

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News seems to think it might be.

In a column he dropped on Thursday, Kawakami believes that the Giants can't risk their postseason spot — the team currently leads the NL wild card race — on the arm of a No. 4 pitcher with a 5.01 ERA who makes more than any hurler not named Sabathia, Santana or Zambrano.

Writes Kawakami:

"They have to seriously consider pulling Zito from the rotation when and if Randy Johnson(notes) is ready to go, presuming Jonathan Sanchez(notes) and Ryan Sadowski(notes) hold up.

"And the Giants have to very seriously consider trying to trade Zito to any suitable team that will take some of his money (Zito has a no-trade clause); or they have to think about releasing him in the off-season."

1. Who the hell is going to trade for Zito?
Who wants to spend $18 million until 2013 for a 4th or 5th starter AT BEST? Even if the Giants pay half his salary, who wants the same pitcher for 9 million a year? The Giants will have to pay some money AND throw in good players or excellent prospects to unload this albatross.

2. The Small Men are probably gonna have to buy out half his contract
just to get him to waive that NTC.

LOL

On top of that still pick up 3 mill a year on his salary just to make him attractive to another team.

3. Throw in Fred Lewis on the deal and maybe the Ngats
can make a deal with Florida or somebody.
