The Rox have good pitching too - Major League leader Marquis wins 12th
Righty allows just five hits over eight; Stewart, Hawpe homer

SAN DIEGO -- Rockies pitcher Jason Marquis didn't get a chance to show his stuff at the All-Star Game in St. Louis, but he showed why he was All-Star-worthy Sunday at PETCO Park.

The righty tossed eight innings, allowing one run on five hits. He stifled the Padres' bats as Colorado rolled to a 6-1 victory to close the series with the Rockies, taking three of four games.

In earning his 12th victory, Marquis (12-6) leads Major League pitchers in the wins category....

1. I watched a few innings of the game and he looked practically unhittable.

The N.L. West doesn't lack for pitching, that's for sure.

5. Except for you two douchebags, who are scared shitless the Giants will collapse.
But do carry on like you don't actually care while the Rockies climb to within a half a game of Frisco. I'm sure everyone believes you.

8. Meanwhile, the entire sporting world is agog over the Giants and can't hear enough about them
and their awesome, earth-shattering possibilities. They are furiously discussed in Cairo cafes, contemplated in Tibetan monasteries, and agonized over in turgid Japanese fan-bars.

Or at least you'd think so with amount of Giants propaganda being shoved down our throats in this forum day after day.

4. Lets take a look at some numbers..
Marquis 12-6 ERA 3.49

Cain 11-3 ERA 2.32

Lincecum 10-2 ERA 2.27

Give me Cain and Lincecum, with their better than a run a game ERAs, over a mediocre pitcher who just happens to be having a halfway decent year anytime.

7. Wilson has 24 saves
tied for tops in the NL...that's what it's all about. Now he does have 4 blown saves, and though that's part of the game, I'd prefer if that was cut in half. Wilson may not be the best in the game but he's in the top 20%.

15. Closer stats can be misleading
I am an old timer and I think today's closer stats are basically bullshit. In the old days they were fireman and came in with men on base and would get out of the situation. Gossage- now that was a closer

13. Yes, let's look at some numbers
Tim Lincecum: 10-2 2.27 ERA 1.04 WHIP .214 opponents batting ave.

Matt Cain: 11-2, 2.32, 1.23, .235 (oba before today's game, I don't have the current number but it will be close)

Dan Haren: 10-5, 1.96, 0.80 (an absolutely sick WHIP), .187

Case closed. Dan Haren is the best pitcher in the NL.

the only logical conclusion of those numbers. Why is anyone putting Marquis up with those three? He's not even in their league.

16. He has an ERA of under 3.50 while pitching in Colorado
That puts him on par with anyone else in the league.

Or, on his away games: 7-3, 1 shutoout, 33 K, 17 BB, 3.32 ERA

34. Crap = legitimate inference based on available data, apparently
Or, more accurately, crap = anything cboy and his sockpuppets don't like. Of course, reading comprehension and logic were never your strong suits, nor the ability to actually refute an argument instead of being a douchenugget.

22. I'm not a big fan of Marquis
but I don't think Lincecom or Caine had to face the lineups that Marquis has in the NL Central or AL central. I think that has a lot to do with it.

Same with Santana or Lowe playing in the NL East having a month going against the AL East. Keep in mind that Lowe pitching in the NL West last season had an ERA of 3.24 which has now gone up to a 4.40.

I even think you take Arroyo out of Cincinatti and the NL Central, place him in the NL west, you'd see his ERA drop and his wins increase. He already has 10 wins with an ERA over 5.

23. Lifetime at Coors field
Lincecum: 2-0 in five starts, 12 BB, 32 K, 4.18 ERA

Cain: 2-2 in six starts, 18 BB, 34 K, 4.09 ERA

Marquis: 8-3 in 13 starts, 32 BB, 45 K, 3.39 ERA

Seems pretty conclusive that Marquis is better than your boys at a park notoriously favorable towards hitters.

I can't find direct statistics, but one can infer from the 42 games played at Coors Field and the 236 runs scored by the Rockies, that the average opposing pitcher ERA is, conservatively, 5.62. So, at least your boys are somewhat above average.

26. Career
Marquis: 91-76 ERA: 4.15

Cain: 41-45 ERA 3.51

Lincecum: 35-12 ERA 2.92

There's a reason Marquis has been with 4 different teams in 10 years, he's a maybe slightly above average pitcher, winning 15 games only once in his career and never posting an ERA below 3.48...can't blame that on Coors Field as this is his first year there.

Marquis has put such sterling numbers as a 14-16 record with a 6.02 ERA in St Louis in 2006, or 12-9 mark, ERA 4.60 with the Cubs the following year. This guy is nothing but a journeyman pitcher who happens to be having one of the better years of his career so far in 2009...he's nowhere near the class of Lincecum or even Cain.

27. Notice that Marquis' ERA is at an all time BEST
Pitching in the shitty NL West?

His best year ERA wise was 3.48 in 2001 while pitching in the NL East. For most of his career he has pitched either in the NL Central or NL East.

Funny how you take a pitcher from either of those divisions and put them in the West and their ERA improves substantially.

29. Which NL division is stronger argument is all but over
because this year it's the NL West...

Team with the best record in MLB: NL West

Top 2 teams in the Wild Card: NL West

Of the 5 teams with 50 or more wins in the NL...3 of them reside in the NL West.

This, IMO, is the way the NL divisions stack up in order of strength:

1. NL West
2. NL Central
3. NL East

30. LOL
The NL West is falling off rather quickly. In June you had the NL East and the NL Central stuck in hell month playing tougher AL teams than the NL West had play the AL West.

Notice now that the Cubs and Brewers are back in the race.

What I've been saying all season long is coming true. I imagine we won't be hearing fom you.

31. The only thing I see "falling off"
is the NL East and your support of it. I notice how now instead you're touting the strength of the NL Central, what happened to the East?

I mean, lets take a look.. The Phillies are the only team above .500 in the entire division, after that you've got nothing but mediocrity followed by the worst team in baseball.

Could it be you now see things my way and are ready to admit the NL East is the poorest division in the NL?

33. I have always said the NL central was the best in the NL
You can't keep tabs on anything, can you?

Oh, and the NL East by and large is better than the NL West. LA may be the only legit team in that lousy sad sack division.

The West didn't have a whole month of going head to head against the beasts of the AL East. Since then the Braves, Marlins and Phillies have climbed back. Same as those in the NL Central after going a month against the AL Central.

You haven't a leg to stand on here.

Everything I have said is coming true given that your team just dropped 2 of 3 to the worst team in the NL Central.
