Poll question: An Upton poll.
As we all know, little U likes to rag on certain members of this forum for using injuries as an excuse for a team struggling. Yet, when it suits his needs he's more than happy to use injuries as an excuse himself.

Now, Upton will say these are all of out of context, and that because he didn't actually refer to the Giants themselves when discussing injuries that they don't count as hypocrisy (even though, as you'll see, he does talk about being worried about Lincecum getting injured), even though he used injuries as an excuse for other teams, including other teams he personally roots for.

Here are the quotes, in their entirety, with the full post included, because Upton and Princess are big on context all of a sudden.

In response to an Op asking who do people think will win the Stanley Cup.

I'm going with the Sharks

I know they haven't been playing that well the last few weeks and have been beset by injuries (Goc and Blake went down yesterday) but they seem to be coming out of their funk and most of their players should be back by the playoffs. So if they can get by the first 2 rounds, with their talent they'll have as good a chance as anyone.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=215&topic_id=89754#89825

In a thread titled "Giants humble Cards 5-3", this is Upton's response to another poster being happy for the Cubs because the Cards loss helped them.

I know the Cubs are having trouble scoring runs and have been beset by injuries but they're still only 4 games back...they've got the most talent, I bet they eventually heat up and win the division.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=215&topic_id=97591#97602

In his own thread titled "Lincecum throws complete game 2 hitter!!..Giants stroll past Cards 10-0" Crankboy says, "He is so good. I imagine he will be the starter for the NL, which doesn't necessarily make me happy. I can never enjoy our all star appearances because I'm always a wreck worrying about how they'll do." Upton responds...

I worry about injuries. You always hear about players like Dizzy Dean, who was hit in the toe by a line drive, or Ray Fosse, when Pete Rose ran him over, careers that were changed by All Star game injuries.

One wonders why he worries about an injury to Lincecum if they don't hurt a team?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=215&topic_id=101522#101624

In a thread titled "Are the Sharks the best team in the NHL" Upton responds thusly...

Right now they are. Todd McLellan is doing a great job. They not only lead the league in scoring but in SOG per game too...they're getting scoring from everywhere. The trade for Dan Boyle was a great move too he fits in perfectly, I'm glad Campbell left now. In Boyle and Blake the Sharks have two out of the top three D men in scoring in the league. We'll see if they can get past that second round jinx when the playoffs start, but barring injury I'm thinking Stanley Cup.

Again, one is forced to wonder why he's so worried about injuries to his beloved Sharks, as injuries are really just an excuse and don't actually hurt any teams.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=215&topic_id=79118#79139

In a thread titled "Any English Premier fans here" Upton has this to say...

Right here. After blowing a two goal lead today, and coupled with the injury to Fabregas exposing more of what was already a weak middle , I'm starting to worry about Arsenal's chances of finishing in the top four.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=215&topic_id=80639#80642

Now, having read those quotes, in their context, who here believes Upton is a hypocrite for ragging on others for saying injuries matter?

8. Notice the way Forkboy purposely leaves out the rest of my response
here we go:

those quotes are taken out of context, but even if I give you that, only 2 of them are related to MLB...

The first is about the Cubs, I don't see the connection to the Giants...and the second, was when I was talking about the All Star game, for I worry like many fans that injuries might occur in what is basically an exhibition game.

Keep looking until you find a quote where I use injuries as an excuse for the Giants' poor play, then you can jump up and down and point out the outrageous hypocrisy of it all, but until then...you FAIL.

Find me the quote where I blame injuries for the Giants poor play..

11. The Lincecum quote.
You're worried about him getting injured because you know an injury to a GIANTS player hurts the GIANTS chances for success. It doesn't matter in what game he gets injured, does it?

Spring training is meaningless (certainly more so than the ASG), but if Lincecum was injured then it would be bad for the Giants, wouldn't it?

Try again, and put some thought into it, would you?

19. They are not injured
That ARE healthy.

You have voiced concerned over what an injury to Lincecom would mean to the Giants.

In regards to the Sharks, what an injury to Boyle or Blake would mean to them.

You realize that if you subtracted the offensive numbers the Mets are missing off of the Giants how devastated that team would be right now?

For the Mets we're talkin 500 hits and a little over 300 runs on the year.

Wanna see what the Giants would like missing that kind of offense?

22. "SHOW ME WHERE I HAVE BLAMED THE GIANTS POOR PLAY ON INJURIES."
Why would you use injuries as an excuse WHEN THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY? Are you really this fucking obtuse and inane? Nevermind, I know the answer.

You said you worried about Lincecum getting hurt. Why? Why are you worried about him getting hurt? Because you know it'll hurt the Giants chances, but if you admit that you're admitting injuries DO make a difference, and that's why you won't answer my questions above. Pussy.

And I will repeat myself, because your skull is so thick that apparently bullets, bricks and well reasoned arguments just bounce off of it. Read this slowly....

YOU USED INJURIES AS A PREEMPTIVE EXCUSE FOR THE SHARKS IN CASE THEY DIDN'T DO WELL, A TEAM YOU ROOT FOR, JUST LIKE YOU ROOT FOR THE GIANTS. YES OR NO?

I do mean some disrespect here. You're a stupid motherfucker.

How was the show?

Posting pictures of alcohol over and over isn't evidence of anything except the fact that you're the compulsive liar you accused me of being.

So let's see your evidence. You have a star. It should be no trouble to find that post where I said I'm always drunk off my ass. Keywords: "Forkboy, drunk" should do it for you.

17. I was actually just gonna mention that
Also

This is what the Mets are missing out of their line up based on last seasons stats

Reyes R 113 H 204 3B 19 SB 56 OBP .358 RBI 68

Beltran R 116 H 172 HR 27 RBI 112

Delgado R 96 H 162 HR 38 RBI 115

You take these kinds of numbers out of any lineup in the league they are gonna have struggles. Upton's argument of "injuries are no excuse" is like saying the Giants adding Beltran at centerfield would make no difference on the team at all.

Better yet, it's like the Giants having Beltran as a CF, he goes down and they are stuck with Aaron Rowand. Rowand couldn't scratch out 100 RBIs to save his life.

With those three out of the line up the Mets are down 300 runs off of their offense this season. Not only that but but over 500 hits.

Upton really has no clue what he's talkin bout as usual.

15. I voted no but I was torn
By trying to simplify it the topic is baseball and there is no example he used the an injury as an excuse for poor play while ragging on others for using that reason. About the other teams he does offer injury as a reason by those teams lack of success they'd otherwise have. He also shown he is worried about Lincecum becoming injured in the All Star Game as that is borderline hypocrisy he hasn't so far as far as I know the Giants are losing because so and so is injured. Also Upton has been somewhat of an asshole to me lately so I was tempted to go 'Yes' but since I can't use that as a reasoning to vote in this poll I tried to be objective while at the same time blocking out the fact he has been somewhat of an ass which probably in the end clouded my judgment causing me to vote 'No'

All in all it is tossup whether he is a hypocrite but so far this season as far as the Giants is concerned he hasn't had the opportunity of a Pablo or Lincecum injury to start blaming the Giants for any losses they might have in that hypothetical scenario. Now in my heart I believe he would jab about injuries if that is the case but I didn't vote on how he might act which I believe he would use injuries of an excuse if Pablo or Lincecum is injured but at the same time we don't arrest people simply because we think given the opportunity they'd rob some people.

18. Stick around
He is claiming that the Mets injuries to Beltran, Delgado and Reyes are a poor excuse for the fact that they are losing ball games by the Bushel.

That his position.

Meanwhile if you subtracted the same amount of offense the Mets are missing off of Frisco, they'd have a worse record than the Nats right now.

20. You're exactly right
Injuries can and do play a role. This may not be the best example but the 2003 Denver Broncos otherwise were a pretty good team but struggled with injuries such as losing LB Ian Gold for the season as well as various injures on the defensive side. Jake Plummer missed 4 games and even backup Steve Buerlein missed one game and third string quarterback Danny Kannell was forced to start a Monday Night Matchup against New England Patriots in which they lost due to a late 4th quarter game winning drive by Tom Brady. They did make the playoffs... barely but no amount of injuries can excuse the absolute whooping the Colts offense displayed on the Broncos secondary. Again I said this isn't the best example of how injuries affect a team's peformance but in many cases it clearly does.

21. Watch this
Frisco is due in NY for a four game sat starting August 14th. That's about the time Reyes, Beltran and Delgado are due back in the line up. Last time these two faced each other I think the Mets only had Beltran and Wright as their top offensive threats in the line up. They Mets took 3-4 from them.

How sweet would it be for those guys to be back and put the final coffin nail in Frisco's season.

They don't have a good road record as it is at 19-28 (Just as bad as the Mets and they had to go through the AL East this season).
