Tiger needs to clean up his act - Rick Reilly article
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=reilly_rick&id=4347419

snip -

"he spent most of his two days at Turnberry last week doing the Turn and Bury. He'd hit a bad shot, turn and bury his club into the ground in a fit. It was two days of Tiger Tantrums -- slamming his club, throwing his club and cursing his club. In front of a worldwide audience.

A whole lot of that worldwide audience is kids. They do what Tiger does. They swing like Tiger, read putts like Tiger and do the celebration biceps pump like Tiger. Do you think for two seconds they don't think it's cool to throw their clubs like Tiger, too?

He's grown in every other way. He's committed, responsible, smart, funny and the most talented golfer in history. I just thought we'd be over the conniptions by now.

If there were no six-second delay, Tiger Woods would be the reason to invent it. Every network has been burned by having the on-course microphone open when he blocks one right into the cabbage and starts with the F-bombs. Once, at Doral, he unleashed a string of swear words at a photographer that would've made Artie Lange blush, and then snarled, "'The next time a photographer shoots a picture, I'm going to break his neck!""

and with acknowlegment to the name of the forgotten comedian from whom I heard this:

do you think golf is a real sport? there, you have grown men, putting a still ball, and the entire audience has to be silent for them to make the perfect shot. give me a real sport, like baseball, where you have 60,000 people hollerin at the top of their lungs while the batter is trying to hit a ball thrown more than 90 mph right at him...

:)

4. Yes you do, RT.
Please. Not another debate on what is a sport and what isn't. Everything we discuss in the Forum is about sports. We discuss Golf. End of story. Forgive us. Sometimes we all hit the wrang type key.

5. Thank you for coming into my mind and telling me what I think

I shared a comment from a comedian I find to be humorous and find the context correct in connection with Woods' outbursts for blown shots.

Come down off your high horse and take the burr out of your saddle while you're at it. Some people have no sense of humor whatsoever.

Do I think golf is a sport? Yes. What stands out to me (as an amateur endurance athlete) is the fact that those guys have to walk the course and that they must do it 4 times over 4 days (presuming they make the cut) and still not only be "decent" with the shots, but accurate and on the green in 2 shots at the most if they want to come at or below par. Having walked several 18 hole rounds in the past, that element stands out the most to me in the sport.

Have a nice Friday.

ON EDIT:

My bad, I missed the comedian reference in the OP.
I thought it was yet another shot directed at me.

7. You should be more concerned about the Braves getting rid of that

God-awful tomahawk chop .. that is if you're an Atlanta fan.

I'd rather camp with the Taliban, than listen to a four game series of something that should have faded away with MC Hammer pants.

9. Not generally a professional sports fan
So what the Braves, Hawks, Dream, Falcons, Thrashers, etc. do/rank doesn't keep me up at night.

You may recall Chief "Knock-a-homa" who has been shelved for the most part due to political correctness.

I am, however, a fan of my city.

Cheers!

15. Have you attended many PGA Tour events in person, CH?
Because I have - somewhere in the neighborhood of at least 50-60 over the last nearly 20 years. I have witnessed MANY outbursts of temper over the years, the large majority of which get very little if any publicity at all, simple due to the player's lack of visibility, be it the result of their relative position in the event, or their status on tour when compared with one of the world's absolute athletic superstars, who can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

16. Isn't everyone?
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 11:26 AM by TZ
seriously why does Tiger need to behave like he has no emotion? I respect someone who shows honest frustration more than someone who is so calculating about their image you never see it. Edit:"I'm mad but I'm not gonna show it cause it might hurt my rep".
I HATE FAKENESS. Which is probably why I'm not a big fan of most golfers.
