Giants acquire Freddy Sanchez
The Giants have acquired Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez in a one-for-one deal for minor-league pitcher Tim Alderson.

As several media outlets have reported, Giants doctors re-examined Sanchez's left knee today and reportedly found no major defects. It became more apparent the deal was getting done this afternoon after the game when reporter Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette told Sanchez not to board the plane he was going to take to Phoenix, where he lives.

Sanchez praised the Giants and their ballpark during the All-Star break and did again today after learning he was traded to San Francisco. "They're really a great team. They have a great pitching staff. They're a fun team to watch. They have fun out there."

I was all for the Giants going after Sanchez but now I have to wonder again if Sabean knows what he's doing. Alderson was one of the Giants top pitching prospects and, along with Bumgarner and Posey, was supposedly considered untouchable.

1. Game, set, and match.
A guaranteed 17th losing season.

2. As you can tell by his remarks
Sanchez is obviously relieved to now be with a team that cares about winning.

Tim Alderson was widely considered be the 2nd best pitching prospect in the Giants' organization. That's probably why it was a one for one trade even though Alderson is only in AA. So it's a good deal from that end for the Pirates. Thing is, if he ever develops as projected, Pittsburgh will trade him away.

4. "Relieved" is not the word. I would say "excited".
Yes, the Giants are contenders this year.

Also until MLB (Selig) can provide a system that forces equity into the mix, this will continue. That is disgraceful and the way the system has been gamed. Most if not all of the other major sports have tried to add some sort of parity into the system.

8. Agreed about the system...
But doesn't change have to come from the owners?

3. You and all the other Bucs fans deserve better than this.
Their management obviously has no interest in winning, and deserves to be run out of town on a rail.

5. I feel for my father, who has been a Pirates fan through the 40's and 50's, saw them go

all the way to win in the 1960 Series. He's not sure if he will ever see them even have a winning season in his lifetime. He will never give up on them though. Since he doesn't give up, neither will I.

7. I'm glad for Freddy
and Jack as well.

I'd love to have had both of them finish their careers in Pittsburgh.

I also thought the suggestion made by them last week that the Bucs sign them to extensions basically as a pair was not only unprecedented, but very accomidating on their part. I'm a little more than upset that they didn't offer Freddie anything that was close to acceptable. Jack's deal was fair, Freddie's wasn't.
