Sporting rivalry is a wonderful and passionate thing. It produces heroes and villains, depending on your point of view. There was one man in English football though that all fans, no matter what allegiance, couldn't help but love. A true gentleman. A man of great class and passion.
It has been announced this morning that the former Ipswich Town, PSV, Barcelona, Newcastle United and England manager, Sir Bobby Robson, died last night, aged 76, after a battle with cancer.
Rest In Peace Bobby.

There aren't many left like him in the world, never mind just in football. During that wonderful (if you were young and English) summer of 1990 the strongest expletive he came up with was "For goodness sake!".

Absolutely. Those memories come flooding back. Turin and the semi-final with Germany: Gazza's tears, Lineker's equaliser, THAT penalty shoot-out, and all watched over by the genial eye of Uncle Bobby.
My favourite memory of that tournament though was David Platt's last minute wonder-goal winner against Belgium in the 2nd round, and the total look of pure joy on Bobby Robson's face as he ran down the touchline in delight. It meant so much to him.
Lots of tributes being made to him today from all over the world. He deserves every single one of them.
I liked the headline on Football365 which simply stated:
SIR BOBBY: PROOF THAT GOOD GUYS WIN

3. I know we're on an American website... |
|
... and some of my best friends are American (HONEST!)but sometimes you just have to feel sorry for our transatlantic cousins. When it comes to football they just don't get it. Just like universal health care and irony.

... I know I shouldn't deal in stereotypes. As a card carrying member of the ABU society (anybody but united) I wish you well for the coming season.
