Jim Thome and Jon Garland are now Dodgers
I think this upstages the Giants signing Brad Penny!

1. details
LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Dodgers have bolstered their roster for a playoff push, acquiring slugger Jim Thome(notes) from the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jon Garland from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The deals were announced by Los Angeles in the top of the eighth inning of Monday night’s game against Arizona. Both trades were for players to be named and were completed before the midnight EDT deadline required for postseason eligibility.

Thome goes from a third-place team trailing Detroit and Minnesota in the American League Central Division to the first-place Dodgers, who came into Monday night leading the NL West by six games.

Garland was told during the game of the deal. He had quite the befuddled look on his face when told to move stuff to the other clubhouse!

:wow:

2. It can't hurt
but remember Thome hasn't played in the field since 2007, he'll be coming off the bench...of course he's a nice option to have from the left side.

As for Garland, he's got a record of 8-11 with an ERA of 4.29...as the Dodgers are hurting for playoff caliber starting pitching, I'm not sure if Garland fills that need. They could catch lightning in a bottle...we'll see.

Since Thome would have had to clear waivers, the Giants apparently weren't interested...they have claimed Trevor Hoffman though, not sure what will become of that.

What's this about upstaging the Giants? Who cares? The Dodgers have a 6 game lead, the Giants are worried about the Rockies, Braves and Marlins...screw the Dodgers.

8. Brewers are going to keep him
Unless they get type A compensation for him they won't let him go, seeing as they got totally screwed with Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia.

4. Picking up a new bag of baseballs would upstage the Penny signing.

But who am I to say anything. The Rox picked up Jose Contreras from the Chicago White Sox.

5. Thome + Ramirez = 1106 career home runs
This is why it hurts to follow Cleveland. Those should be ours.
