Brad Penny!!!
Throws 8 shutout innings in a 4-0 Giants victory.

What's this about the Giants getting upstaged?

2. In a way..
I think they both, in different ways, showed the Red Sox a little something tonight.

You've got to wonder..Smoltz and now Penny have looked great after the Sox released them.

4. Well Thome and Garland haven't played yet
Jon starts tomorrow, so we'll see.

I hope for your sake Penny stays at that level. He started out great for the Dodgers, too, then he ended up stinking last year.

5. Penny was injured last year
but as you are no doubt aware, he won 16 games for the Dodgers in '06 and '07 (ERA 3.03)..If he's returned to that Brad Penny the Giants will be very happy. Last night he hit 97 on the gun along with a nice changeup, he was still throwing 94 in the 8th...you never know, maybe getting out of Boston was all he needed.

As for Garland and Thome, I doubt very seriously if their debuts can be anywhere near as impressive.

9. Did Penny retire 14 batters in a row?
Okay, Penny's debut was better but not by much. Still, Garland pitched a great game after a horrible 1st inning. When this gets added to Thome's debut I think you will know who upstaged who.

Garland beats D’Backs 4-2 in Dodgers debut
12 hours, 14 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Growing up in Southern California, Jon Garland(notes) always dreamed of pitching at Dodger Stadium.

Even in his wildest imagination, he probably didn’t think it would happen against a bunch of guys who were his teammates a couple days earlier.

Facing the team that traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers just three days earlier, Garland retired his last 14 batters to lead the NL West leaders to a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night and a split of the four-game series.

6. In all his time in Boston he never went longer than 6 1/3 innings.
Go figure.

7. Eli Whiteside, Giants catcher, said he looked at film and noticed Penny
was throwing a lot of fastballs early in the count. Whiteside called for more off-speed pitches yesterday, and that was the difference. Penny said no other catcher ever called a better game for him.

8. That's cool.
I have nothing against Penny. He made some good starts for the Sox. Nothing great, but he gave them some innings and kept them close in many games.

But, and this may bum some out, it's easier to pitch in the NL than it is the AL due to the DH rule. The bottom of the order in the NL, generally speaking, is often a lot weaker than it is in the AL, where they can just load up on hitters right down the order (some teams are like a murderers row).

10. East is east and west is west.....
Actually the American League is the American league and the National is the national...there is a big difference.
