Legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell has terminal cancer. Just damn.
His voice was clear, his spirit strong, his words tinged with humor.

But legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell had bracing news to deliver Thursday: He has a tumor in the area of the bile duct. It is incurable. Yet Harwell said he feels calm and prepared for what comes next.

"We don't know how long this lasts," Harwell said in a phone interview. "It could be a year, it could be much less than a year, much less than a half a year. Who knows?

"Whatever's in store, I'm ready for a new adventure. That's the way I look at it." . . . http://www.freep.com/article/20090903/NEWS05/309030002/1318/Not-even-cancer-diagnosis-can-shake-Harwell-s-spirit

Anyone who ever heard him knows there was never a finer sports broadcaster anywhere than Ernie Harwell. In any sport. This fan of the Tigers for nearly half a century can't imagine a world without Ernie, but it's coming. Damn. Great long life well lived, though. He deserves all the honors he is about to get.

4. I loved to listen to Tigers games on the radio because of him
Back in 1984 I was living in the Detroit area and was so in love with the great Tigers. When they weren't on TV I would turn on the radio and just listen to his calm soothing voice. His delivery was one of the best in MLB. My Dad took us to a few games that Summer. The thrill for me was when we got to meet Mr Harwell (and Sparky Anderson). They were both so gracious and I will always remember that day (it was a double-header and my Dad was friends with a man in the Tiger's front office).

5. Oh geeze
And the fly ball pops into the stands where it's caught by a young lady from Alpena!

I lay odds on Ernie to give it a good fight. Though he is 91, and has led a wonderful life.
