Pirates make history!!! 17 consecutive losing seasons!!!
The Chicago Cubs assured the Pittsburgh Pirates of a record-breaking 17th consecutive losing season, getting two homers from Derrek Lee and an effective start from Ted Lilly while winning 4-2 on Monday.

By losing their 10th in 11 games, the Pirates will finish below .500, just as they have every season since 1993. The string of losing seasons is a major league record and the longest for any team in the four major North American pro team sports. Only the Phillies (1933-48) have had as many as 16 losing seasons in a row.

Congratulations Pirates!!!

3. Obviously you have no appreciation for sports history
Lets go over once again what the Pirates organization has achieved....the 17 consecutive losing seasons represent the longest streak for any team in the history of the four major North American pro team sports.

6. Well I have plenty of appreciation of sports history
and part of that history is that the SF Giants have never won a world series for their hometown fans.

Now that's fucking sad.

8. Interesting
but the SF Giants inability to win a WS is not a major league record. Therefore, your post is entirely irrelevant to this thread topic....

I appreciate the effort put into your response, but please try to do better in the future.

12. I would certainly categorize it as a record of futility for the poor SF Fans,
Douche--- you come in dissing a team who has at least won a WS for their fans....

That's the point Douche.

4. And to add insult to injury
only 14,673 showed up at PNC Park to see the Pirates break the record.

Just think, you've got next year to look forward to...

Eighteen in a row, coming right up!!

5. So?
The Pirates
1960, 1971 and 1979.
That's three WS wins since the Giants moved to SF.
SF Giants have won...0.

(Maybe the Giants lack of winning the WS is because various east coast teams hated to move west. That's gotta be it!)

However down in LA...

The Dodgers
1959, 1963, 1965, 1981 and 1988.
That's five WS wins for the Dodgers since both the Dodgers and Giants moved to the west coast.
SF Giants have won...0.

Meanwhile across town...
The A's
1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989.
That's four WS wins for the A's.
SF Giants have won...0.

I don't think I'd ride the Pirate's or their fans if I were you c-upton. In fact I'd probably be real still about other teams.

9. Whether you like it or not
the Pirates rather dubious historic achievement is a big story throughout the sports world today. As a sports forum contributor, it would be remiss of me if I didn't point it out.

If my doing so offends your sensibilities, perhaps you would be happier over in the Lounge.

10. Yup. The Small Men are an embarrassment
to California, compared to the A's and Dodgers. Give them time and they will set records for futility. 55 years and counting...

13. Interesting point you make Gemini! Amazing how the three teams that
c-upton disses have a combined total of 12 World Series Championships while his has not had one in 55 years, and has NEVER had one in the city of San Francisco. Pretty sad, isn't it.

7. Fun facts
During these 17 consecutive losing seasons, the Pirates overall record has been 1158-1501...that's .435 baseball, for an average season of 70-92.

The closest they came to breaking the streak was in 1997 when they went 79-83. Their worst season during all this time was 2001 when they finished with a 62-100 mark.
