Jarrod Washburn is an ass. I have no idea why everyone was so anxious to get him. It's my opinion that he only wants to play for the Angels, so he'll just stink it up every else.

1. He was pitching great with the Mariners this year
ERA of 2.64...that's why the Tigers wanted him.

2. Well he sucks as a Tiger
They had to yank him in the second inning - not even Leyland had any patience with him this time. I think he's only won one of his starts.

What was his record with the Mariners?

3. Lets see
8-6 but the Mariners are right near the bottom of the league in runs scored and have been all year, so it's about the ERA.

I think part of the problem is that Washburn is a flyball pitcher, well suited for the dimensions of Safeco...maybe not so much for Comerica.

4. Comerica is a big park - I think it's bigger than Safeco
Apparently one of the problems is that it's warmer in Detroit than it is in Seattle (and Safeco Field can be very, very cold at times - they come through with cocoa during night games and people buy it!) and the ball carries farther. If he wasn't such a chump, maybe he could adjust to it.

5. Actually since they moved the fences in
Comerica is significantly smaller than Safeco in the power alleys:

Left Center

Comerica-370
Safeco-390

Right Center

Comerica-365
Safeco-386

I also notice that KC had a 3 run HR to left center tonight, maybe that ball would have been caught at Safeco. Twenty feet is a big difference, I'm not saying that accounts for all of Washburn's problems, but it's no doubt played a part.

6. Comerica is still a big yard
What good is he if he can only pitch in ginormous parks? God forbid he should pitch at Fenway or Wrigley Field.

7. Hey LisaM,
We're going to be facing you first in the postseason!
Incidentally, I'm kinda embarrassed to admit this, but I produced some eye dampness when I saw the remains of Tiger Stadium. :(
Comerica is nice, but my heart aches seeing history torn town.

8. If the Tigers make it
They're just clinging to first place - if the Twinkies weren't imploding, it would be ugly.

Are you a Yankees fan? A couple of summers ago I was in NYC, and I took a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (lovely). A guy coming the other way was wearing a shirt that said, "Detroit Sucks" which I found completely puzzling, since it seemed to kick'em when they're down. But my sister pointed out that it was probably from the 2006 playoffs.

9. Yea, I am a Yankees fan. I asked my dad one time why I grew
up rooting for them instead of the Mets and he said it's generational, which I assumed. His dad is a Yankee fan. I guess that's the way it works out, unless you're born in Queens. Then I think you're obligated to cheer for the Mets. NY sports is complicated, especially since some of the teams are physically located in New Jersey, yet maintain the NY name.
The "Detroit Sucks" shirt is odd, but your sister might be right. The only fans I know for sure who are unconditionally terrorized are from Boston, Massachusetts!! However, I would just say don't expect coming here and receive the red carpet treatment if you cheer for any franchise other than the Yankees or another local. That's just the way it goes here!
