Report: 49ers file tampering charges against Jets
The New York Daily News reported that the 49ers have filed tampering charges with the NFL. Citing sources, the paper said that the Jets might have contacted agent Eugene Parker about the No. 10 pick out of Texas Tech.

A Jets spokesman denied the allegations.

The 49ers released a statement this morning that said: "Those are internal matters that are handled by the league, therefore we are not going discuss the topic."

Crabtree, who turned 22 last Monday, missed all of training camp and the first two victories of the 49ers' season because of a contract impasse.

The Daily News noted that Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum has a good relationship with Parker dating back to a complicated offer sheet that helped Curtis Martin work his way from the Patriots to the Jets as a restricted free agent. (Tannenbaum declined to comment to the Daily News on Sunday.)

Mike Singletary, in his news conference today, certainly seemed to indicate the 49ers have indeed filed tampering charges with the NFL... "The league's going to handle that internally," Singletary said. "We'll let that play out. I'm going to let the league handle that."

One thing though, I'm one of the few that doesn't have a problem with players trying to get more money(owners will find any way to cut a player when they want to) especially in cases where they deserve and Crabtree did have a point as Oakland gave Darrius Heyward-Bey(18 yards in 2 starts, also 3 drops vs SD) a nice contract when Crabtree is clearly a better receiver. But this strategy of sitting out the entire season to re-enter the draft next year will vastly decrease his value. This strategy will in fact lose him lots of money so I don't understand the rational but as it has been reported it's from his cousin also working as his advisor.

3. "The 49ers could deal Crabtree's rights prior to the Oct. 20 trade deadline..."
I didn't realize. By all means, do it!

2. Well, the forty-whiners are familiar with tampering. They got busted in 2007...

The 49ers were caught tampering two years ago. They forfeited their fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft and switched third-round picks with the Bears after commissioner Roger Goodell said they tampered with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs.

Goodell said the 49ers violated the NFL's anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about his client during the 2007 season. Niners general manager Scot McCloughan said at the time the team believed it acted ''within the NFL guidelines.''

Hmm. Pot meets the kettle and calls it black!!

4. That's a good point: tampering happens all the time, but the NFL singled out SF.
My guess is that on top of trying to protect their interest in Crabtree, this complaint about NYJ is really a challenge to the NFL to be consistent in its application of tampering rules: "If you're going to punish us for tampering, you'd better punish everyone else who supposedly tampers"

5. So what?
If you are convicted of a crime, does that invalidate your right to ever call the police?

Moreover, does that make you immune to ever having a crime committed against you?

If this is true, the Niners deserve at the very least a draft pick.

6. It doesn't work like that
(Everything besides your last sentence is true )

But teams that are tampered with don't gain draft picks, it's teams that do the tampering that lose draft picks or face a fine.

8. Ok
but part of the 49ers punishment two years ago, for fooling with Briggs, was switching 2008 3rd round draft picks (the Niners pick that year was 5 spots higher) with the Bears..

So, while the Niners might not directly gain a draft pick, they could benefit should the Jets be found guilty.

I do know what happens for certain what happens to teams that are caught tampering but not sure what happens when teams are tampered with. I apologize for the reactionary post because I may be wrong :hi:

Edit I was wrong. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3310056

7. Are you talking about DeBartolo??
I just found the fact that the 49er's had been busted before. A fact you and your local newspaper conveniently missed.
