Matt Cain wins 2009 Willie Mac Award
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 12:49 PM by Upton
The Giants appreciate more about Matt Cain than just his pitching.

The right-hander known for his aggressive approach on the mound received the "Willie Mac" Award, given annually to the most inspirational Giant through a vote conducted among players, coaches and the training staff.

"It's pretty cool to know that's the way they look at me, as a leader and a motivator," Cain said Friday.

Cain turns 25 on Oct. 1 and is the award's youngest recipient since the inaugural winner, outfielder Jack Clark in 1980, who was also 24. He's also the first starting pitcher to be named the award's sole winner since Dave Dravecky in 1989.

Tremendous honor, it's great to see Matt's teammates show their appreciation in this way..

1. Who cares?
Either way, the Small Men are going down in flames. They are choking.

And not a word from you about it.

Funny.

Created by the Rotary Club of Denver, the Branch Rickey Award is the home of the Baseball Humanitarians Hall of Fame recognizing professionals in Major League baseball for exceptional community service.

5. Hmm..
Barry Zito was the Giants nominee for the Branch Rickey Award this year, and looking at his resume, it appears to me he was as deserving as anybody: http://www.branchrickeyaward.org/nom09/nom09_Zito.htm

Furthermore, no Giant has ever been selected for this award....I wonder what that's about?

6. Zito was worthy.
I just think Torri has been doing it longer.
