Dallas Cowboys are Americas Favorite Team for the third straight year!

New York, N.Y. — October 7, 2009 — Not only do the Dallas Cowboys have a brand new stadium this year, they are also chosen yet again as America’s favorite football team among those who follow professional football. The Pittsburgh Steelers come in at number 2 (up from 4th last year) and the Chicago Bears are in at number three (up from number 6 last year). Rounding out the top five are the Indianapolis Colts (down from number 3) and the New England Patriots (down from number two).

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,334 adults, of whom 1,194 follow professional football, surveyed online between September 8 and 15, 2009 by Harris Interactive.

Finishing up the top ten favorite football teams are the Green Bay Packers (down one from No. 5), the Philadelphia Eagles (up one from No. 8), the New York Giants (up one from No 7), the Tennessee Titans who jumped up 16 spots from number 25 to the number 9 spot and the Minnesota Vikings (up two from No. 12).

4. The haters especially can't live without the Cowboys

I think they are the most obsessed team by the haters. To me, it's almost a mental illness. The people who cheered when the practice facility collapsed, when a paralyzed player was on the field in Philly, or wanting a Cowboy charter to crash. It is a sickness, I'm afraid. But you know what - they can't live without them!

I hate Jerry Jones, and I'm the biggest Cowboy fan on this board. Yes, moreso than Madinmaryland. I was going to Cowboy games in the Cotton Bowl years.

The hate, though, I have seen even before Jerry took over. But he has helped crystallize some of that, too, I believe.

7. Really, it's a sickness

I had a friend who is a nurse. From the metroplex. She moved to New York city and worked there for a couple of years. Not a football fan by any stretch.

The day after the Cowboys lost to the New York Giants, she caught all kinds of hell from the staff. She didn't know what was going on. She didn't follow football - couldn't even name one Cowboy. They had her in tears. She still talks about that, and that was one reason why she came back. This all occurred in the late 80's.

25. I blame the media for the hate -- really

IMO it started with all-American Navy hero Roger Staubach -- who came along just as TV realized what a money earner it had in pro football. And the media, as it will do, hyped him and Landry and the Cowboys ad nauseam until they built up an audience. It continued through Aikman and Smith and Johnson and persists in Romo and Jerry Jones and that billion dollar stadium. They did this at the expense of other teams who earned and deserved the recognition but didn't get it even when the Cowboys were playing flat. That tends to piss people off who follow other teams. To make matters worse, the media canonized all the cowboy/swagger/Texas big thinking cliches and then wrapped the American flag around it. If you're not on the Cowboys sideline it can be odious to observe.

Everyone talked about the Sox, even though they hadn't won anything since what, Wilson was in office? And yet they had such a strong fan base. Hell, even I was pulling for the Sox in 2004. But never again.

And let me tell you, there were more shenanigans going on in the 70's than the early 90's. There was a nickname going around Dallas around that time - the Cokeboys. Hollywood Henderson in particular was a raving lunatic.

Every problem, every damn traffic ticket, and the Cowboys are news. I am not going to defend their actions, but to think the Cowboys are the only franchise to have "criminals" on it is preposterous.

that New Orleans isn't in the top ten. Its the best city in the country to come to for a Football game. Maybe not for opposing teams but their fans have a great time. Hotels and bars all within walking distance of the SuperDome and 24 hour partying.

Popularity on a poll like this builds on many years of media exposure, and not recent success. And it usually has little to do with the city itself - how many Cowboys fans have ever been to Dallas?

We're talking about a national survey here... every team has local die-hards, but only a few can parlay longterm futility or being "colorful" without success into a broad-based, loyal following. And that quirky appeal thing seems to work much better in baseball than the NFL.

cause I'm lazy and don't like big crowds but we usually hang out at the Tropical Isle on Bourbon Street, drink Draft Bud and watch the game on TV. We chat with the visiting teams fans as they come and go and so many of them say that they go to one or two away games a year but always come to New Orleans if the Saints are on their schedule. I recall a beautiful site about 5 or 6 or 7 years ago sitting at the TI and looking south on Bourbon Street watching Dallas Cowboy clad fans with their heads down returning from the Dome after their team got spanked. I believe that happened two years in a row.

I think the Saints were loveable when they were losing and I think they are loveable now.

Why don't you come down in a couple of weeks, I think there's a Texas team coming to town. No doubt the Who Dats (fans) will have fun with Romo.

So, I'm reading this book, and the first chapter tells the story of how Michael Irvin slashed the throat of Everett McIver, a teammate who worked his way into the NFL from practice squads of other teams and had a baby daughter with heart problems.

McIver made the horrible mistake of not getting out of the barber chair when Michael Irvin demanded that he do so. McIver who had been bullied often by Irvin refused because it was indeed his turn. Irvin shouted senority. A fight ensued, and Irvin slashed the throat of McIver.
