UNIVERSITY PARK – For the first time since 1984, SMU will be playing in college football’s postseason. The Mustangs are headed to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, athletic director Steve Orsini and head coach June Jones announced Tuesday in front of a large group of fans, band members, cheerleaders and administrators at the Hughes-Trigg student center.
SMU, which will face an undetermined opponent on Dec. 24, went 7-5 and completed the biggest turnaround in the nation after winning only one of 12 games last year.
“It’s amazing,” said junior running back Chris Butler. “I knew we had guys who were capable.”
“But it took a long time for these players to smile and joke and laugh,” added Jones.
This season was SMU’s best since 1987, when the NCAA penalized SMU for major rules violations by forbidding the school from fielding a team for two consecutive years. The draconian punishment, known as the death penalty, crippled the program for more than two decades as the Mustangs cycled through five coaches and slogged through eight seasons during which they achieved one or fewer victories.
