Poll question: If Nebraska wins the Big 12 Championship game, do they deserve a BCS Bowl (Fiesta)? |
|
I know that Nebraska won't win, but if they did, would it be fair for a 22nd ranked team with three losses to get all that money (after all, that's what it's mostly about) from a big bowl?
Past upsets:
1998 - Texas A&M (10th) 36 - Kansas State (2nd) 33 in OT
2001 - Colorado (9th) 39 - Texas (3rd) 37
2003 - Kansas State (15th) 35 - Oklahoma (1st) 7
2007 - Oklahoma (9th) 38 - Missouri (1st) 17
The 1996 Texas (unranked) upset of Nebraska (3rd) doesn't count because there was no BCS back then. Thank goodness, because that is one of my favorite games and the first Big 12 Championship.

1. Not gonna happen, but 2003 everyone said that wasn't gonna happen... |
|
...people were touting OU as the best team in history.
But if it does happen, no, far too many more deserving teams...texas losing will still probably leave 4 undefeated teams in the top 5.

They could knock Georgia Tech or Iowa out. Both are 10 and 2.

Than Nebraska.
Boise State will also most probably play in a BCS bowl game. You really do not have an argument here.

No, of TCU, Boise State and Cincy, even if all 3 go undefeated, at least one is bound to be screwed...face it, your team doesn't deserve it.

29. Iowa is no better than Nebraska? |
|
Iowa is better than Nebraska in every way. Football and lifestylewise. I hope Nebraska wins so that Iowa can kick their asses in the Fiesta Bowl. I am tired of people putting down the Hawkeyes just because they "win ugly". Boise State will indeed play in a BCS game if the BCS wants to stay relevant and not have the power of Congress coming down on them. But if Nebraska wins, will it be Cincy or TCU facing Alabama in the "National Championship game"? My guess is Cincy simply because they play in the Big East. So in my estimation, TCU will be the odd team out with a Cornhusker victory. Incidentally, the nickname "Cornhuskers" was originally the University of Iowa's nickname. But they thought it stunk so they gave it up. Then that hokie state to the west took it.

3. If they win, they're the Big XII champs |
|
so they get an automatic berth.
Same deal if Oregon State had pulled it off last night: off to the Rose Bowl they'd have gone: 16th (or slightly higher) ranking and all.
Hell, Colorado almost went to The Show with three losses one year!

Big 10, Pac 10 thing...this is a different question, really, and they're not at all deserving.

The teams count as BCS top 10s. I mean they take two slots away.

16. Rose Bowl is a part of the BCS |
|
Why do you think the National Championship is in Pasedena this year? The NC game rotates with New Orleans, Miami, and Glendale, all BCS Bowl sites. While the Rose Bowl slots the winner of the Pac 10 vs Big 10 that is not in the National Championship all the Bowls do this. Fiesta gets the Big 12 Champ, Orange gets the ACC Champ, and the Sugar Bowl gets the SEC Champ. Big East Champ falls into one of the threw usually the Orange Bowl. However say Pac 10 team goes to the NC then the Rose Bowl is Big 10 vs Someone else.

5. If they beat Texas, they'll get it. |
|
I guess the question is, if Texas loses, will they still deserve to be in the national championship game? I suspect, win or lose, they will still be in it against the SEC winner, though there will still be several undefeated teams, and the loser of the SEC championship will have a legit argument that they should get in over the loser of the big 12 championship since their only loss was to a much higher ranked team. I don't think the BCS people have any intention of running an all SEC national championship game, though, and I don't think anyone in the BCS is looking forward to giving any of the undefeateds a shot.

7. If Texas loses either of these two things will happen: |
|
1) TCU will play the winner of the SEC Championship for the title.
2) Florida and Alabama will play again in the BCS Championship.
If #2 happens it will be another nail in the BCS coffin. But since it is up to the final BCS poll, who knows? There is no provision to prevent it.

I still wouldn't be shocked to see Texas get in anyway, though. It wouldn't be the first time a big XII team lost it's conference championship and still got a spot in the national championship game (Nebraska 2001).

Hell no!
These conference championships screw everything up. Just take whoever is ranked the highest after the conference championships.
But they need to get rid of these automatic entries from just six of the conferences if they ever want to have anything that resembles a playoff system.
Oh wait! Those six conferences set up the BCS in the first place? Nevermind.

The Big 12, SEC and the ACC all created these super conferences for one reason. More $$$$. An extra game equals more revenue for the conference. I love it when it bites them in the ass. Probably won't happen tomorrow, though. Texas will win big. And wise guy..... let me guess. An SEC fan.

They'd be conference champions of the Big 12, and that certainly merits a BCS bid. And while they might be the lowest-ranked Big 12 team to ever get a bid, they wouldn't be the weakest automatic bid ever, nor the lowest-ranked team to get in.
And, as bad as Nebraska looked in mid-October, with their turnover fest against Iowa State and their blowout loss to Tech, they've been a pretty solid team otherwise, and outstanding defensively. Their only other loss was at Virginia Tech, by a point. They're not as good as Texas, but there've been worse teams in the Big 12 CCG.
