Redskins dump Suisham, sign Gano
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/jason-reid/redskins-dump-suisham-sign-gan.html

Two days after place kicker Shaun Suisham's missed chip-shot field goal contributed to an overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Redskins today waived the five-year veteran and signed Graham Gano after kicking tryouts at Redskins Park.

Gano won the Lou Groza award at Florida State and kicked most recently for Las Vegas of the UFL. After the UFL season ended, he tried out last week for the New York Giants.

For the Redskins, re-signing Dave Rayner, the only other place kicker in training camp, was not an option. When the team released him on Sept. 5, Rayner was given an injury settlement, which bars him from kicking again in 2009.

Owner Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, decided to make a change at the position after Suisham - in his third full season in the role for the Redskins - failed to deliver late in the 33-30 overtime loss to the Saints at FedEx Field. With 1 minute 56 remaining in regulation, the Redskins lined up for a 23-yard field-goal attempt that would have extended their lead to 10 points. The ball sailed wide right.

..snip

They should have done it several weeks ago.

3. Sure
He still knew how to run a football organization and better than most anybody else I can think of; certainly better than Dan Snyder.

Too bad he didn't keep better company than former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards, who now resides in a federal pen in Texas.

4. The Life Of A Kicker
Swisham hadn't missed a FG until the Dallas game.

Now, a few weeks later, he is out of a job.

Nick Folk might not be far behind.

5. Ain't that truth
I remember 1997 the Cards had Kevin Butler even won a game for AZ in overtime against Dallas week 2. After another two weeks of close losses they were up against a hot 4-0 Buccaneers team with explosive rookie Warrick Dunn. Anyways it was 19-18 Tampa lead with about enough time for one more play. I think it was about a 40-45 yarder on the right hash mark and anyways he missed the kick was waaaaay wide right. Anyways they brought in Joe Nedney and that was the end of Butler. I still have his autograph.

7. Nedney's doing great with the Niners
I believe he's only missed 1 kick under 40 yards in 2 1/2 years..

If the Redskins had Nedney, those lucky Saints would no longer be undefeated.
