Another sports figure arrested
Judge sets bond for fugitive chess master at $1.5 million

FORT COLLINS - Captured fugitive and convicted child sex offender Robert Snyder is likely to remain behind bars after a hearing Friday morning where Judge Dave Williams set the former Fort Collins chess teacher's cash only bond at a combined $1.5 million.

Snyder's first appearance in district court came two days after he was returned to Larimer County from Texas, where he was taken after being deported from the Central American nation of Belize.

"The biggest thing is this is not just a significant flight risk, but a virtual certain flight risk," Williams said explaining his rationale for setting such a high bond.

Police were able to locate Snyder in Belize where he fled in 2008 after his release from jail and after being convicted of felony sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and two counts of misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact. His two victims in the case dating back to 2005 were both students at Snyder's local chess academy....

3. Bobby Fischer was pretty controversial, also. BTW, isn't spraining your
brain an injury that would qualify as a "sports" injury??

4. I could set you a whole litany of chess masters I wouldn't hold up as role models

Besides Fischer and his anti-Semitism, there was Bogolyubov and his. He lived in Germany in the 1930s and thought it good humor to tell anti-Semitic jokes to Jewish players. Dr. Alekhine never completely owed up to the anti-Semitic tracts he wrote for a Nazi publication while he lived in occupied France. He denied writing them and said he had little choice but to acquiesce to their publication under his by-line. The issue of his authorship was determined once and for all years after Alekhine's death when manuscripts were found in his handwriting among his effects.

I certainly hold Bogolyuov's public display of tasteless humor up to youngsters and certainly not Alekhine's cowardice. Fischer had a better excuse for his behavior in that he was a raving lunatic.

That's not to mention various and sundry drunks and philanderers, but they are in every walk of life.

As for Mr. Snyder, I haven't opened the link in the OP, but if I recall from hearing about this case some years ago, he is accused of molesting children under his charge while acting as a chess coach. This is the first I've heard of the story in a long, long time.

If he's guilty, throw the book at him. He can pass time giving chess lessons to the other inmates in prison.
