NFL Week 17 picks (with points spreads)
No Thursday night game. No Monday night game. Just a full slate of Sunday NFL action. Many games even matter. Posting early to account for upcoming revelry and nagging hangovers.

We'll be doing playoffs under the same format. Picks will be posted Wednesday or Thursday for the first two rounds and due Saturday before first kickoff. Conference playoffs will be posted Friday and due Sunday before first kickoff. If there's a W / L percentage tie for the Superbowl let's add over/under to declare a true victor.

As always, good luck, thanks for playing, and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.

1. Oh crap!
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 11:13 AM by JonLP24
I wasn't expecting this soon. I'll have standings updated later.

Now I may lose because I'm rooting for the Giants and Cowboys this week and that will reflect my picks.

San Francisco
Baltimore
Buffalo
Carolina
Jacksonville
Dallas Let's go Cowboys!!
Chicago
New England
Miami
Giants Let's go G-Men!!
Cincinnati
Atlanta
Arizona
Denver
San Diego
Tennessee

Some weird spreads, Houston and Jets somewhat heavy favorites over teams with better records.

2. The Pats And Bengals Will Probably Rest Their Starters
Just like the Colts did.

That's the reason for those point spreads.

3. I thought that might be the case
First year I picked spreads so picking games on week 17 is new to me.

4. You gotta root for the Packers, also! If all three of those teams win,
Boys, Giants, and Packers, then the Cowboys earn a first round bye!!

:woohoo:

9. I've been referred to elsewhere as the "rabid terrapin"
:D

BTW, the chances of the scenario I brought up is remote at this time. I just want us to beat the Eagles.

6. Is Bengals/ Jets the best NBC can do Sunday night?
Instead of Dallas/Philly or Arizona/Green Bay we get Bengals/ Jets. Not that it's a bad game, but the other two are a lot more meaningful. What happened to flex scheduling? Is NBC required to show the AFC Sunday night or something?

I don't believe the S.F. Bay Area will be getting a late NFC game either. Looks like an afternoon at the Sports Bar.

7. They do flex scheduling for a bad game that isn't sold out
Not for a game that's good but not quite as good as another game. From what I understand it but it is a very meaningful game for the Jets.

8. Might as well check out what the NFL has to say:
Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups on Sunday night in those weeks and gave surprise teams a chance to play their way onto primetime.
The 2007 NFL schedule will again utilize flexible scheduling in Weeks 11-17. The NBC Sunday night time slot for "flex" weeks will list the game tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.

Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game will be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.

Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL will have the flexibility to move the start times of games on Sundays, using a 12-day notice format.

For example, a game scheduled for a Sunday could move from a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff to an 8:15 p.m. start, but the change would be made and announced no later than the prior Tuesday, 12 days prior.

The NFL has commonly moved games between 1:00 p.m. ET and 4:15 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoons, and the NFL now employs flexible scheduling to include one of its primetime packages of games - on Sunday evenings.

Sunday afternoon games, as in the past, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET.

In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice.

I guess you're right about the "good but not quite as good as another game" angle. But the networks have done all sorts of fucked-up things in the name of ratings before -- particularly in baseball -- so I guess I'm scratching my head a little as to why the Philly/Dallas game, which would generate a much larger national audience, is not being televised.

10. I Don't Think That NBC Could Do Philly/Dallas A Second Time
per agreement between the networks.

Fox would not want to give up such a big game.

12. See post #2
Like the poster said I think it has something to do with the fact the Bengals and Patriots have home field in the first round no matter what happens so they may rest some starters.

13. I didn't know that about Cincy, but it matters with the seeding, 3 and 4
are undecided...you would think one team might want #3...although I would rather get the #4 seed and hopefully get a rematch with Indy.

14. 2OO3
Denver was 1O-5 and Tennessee was 1O-4. Denver was heading to Green Bay and if they won and Tennessee lost Denver would be the #5 seed facing the #4 seed and Tennessee would have been the #6 seed.

That didn't matter to Mike Shannahan because the way he put it, their first game in the playoffs would have to be on the road no matter what so he rest his starters. I can imagine the same could be true for New England and Cincinnati. Their first playoff game will be at home no matter what. Now seeding does determine who gets home field if they happen to meet each other the AFC Championship game so I'll imagine they could play to win.

givemebackmycountry (6-6) WEEK 7

Half of weeks played qualifies you for a percentage. There was 16 weeks so half of that is 8. Next week is 17 and since it is an odd number it will still be 8.
